WEIRD-075 Sagan Genesis / Waxy Tomb - split Tape
Sagan Genesis / Waxy Tomb
split
(WEIRD-075)
Tape
This tape documents 2 more KDVS-linked artists: Sagan Genesis and Waxy Tomb.

When I first heard Sagan Genesis, I was struck by his melodic synth music -- he actually played arpeggios instead of the arpeggiate button (musicianship, how quaint!). This tape rolls around a year+ later and maybe college life has beaten him down. The music's darker and atmospheric. Even when melodies do creep in, they're less sunny CA and more overcast Portland. Great moody stuff.

Waxy Tomb is Julia Litmer-Cleper. Tape listeners will miss out on the spectacle of her live show, which incorporate some performance art. But in a recorded setting, her minimal, vaguely menacing neo-proto-industrial-noise songs stand out all the more.

Limited edition of 60.

WEIRD-074 Smegma / Colour Buk - split Tape
Smegma / Colour Buk
split
(WEIRD-074)
Tape
Some bands just have it - that special ability to consistently weave a magical soundweb out of nothing, taking listeners on a journey to places unknown. Smegma's been doing it for decades now and Weird Forest is proud to present this live performance from 2010.

Colour Bük is weird. Not weird in a fashionably arty kind of way, either. Don't get me wrong, I've hung out with them and they're cool but these strange cats can vibe out both your hipster girlfriend and Republican grandma. This strangeness is just seeping out of their music too. After last year's bizarre Our Favorite Fucking Day tape, Colour Bük returns with a set that sounds little like OFFD tape but retains that same twisted sensibility.

WEIRD-073 Monterey Babe Aquarium - S/T Tape
Monterey Babe Aquarium
S/T
(WEIRD-073)
Tape
UC Davis, site of the pepper-sprayed Occupy protests, is also home to KDVS, the free-form radio station which has been a breeding ground for the region's freak music scene for decades, spawning the likes of DJ Rick, Scott Soriano (S-S Records) and Weird Forest founder, Chad Stockdale. The station, along with the UCD technicultural studies program helmed by Bob Olstertag, has recently fostered a small but vibrant music scene.

Monterey Babe Aquarium peddles hypnotic hypnagogic pop, with catchy melodies repeated over equally tasty rhythms. While the trio boasts stellar musicians (two of them also play in a technical metal band), MBA keeps it simple, taking listeners deep into the zone-out realm.

WEIRD-072 Garrincha & The Stolen Elk - Void LP
Garrincha & The Stolen Elk
Void
(WEIRD-072)
LP
With a pair of cassette releases in recent months on the venerable tape labels, Stunned Records and 905 Tapes, Garrincha & The Stolen Elk may seem like neophytes on the scene but the truth is Davy Bui and Matt Kretzmann have been making music together in one form or another since 2002. Both have been active in their regional noise and DIY scenes for years with little official documentation other than Bui's releases in Antennas Erupt! for Weird Forest and S-S Records. Garrincha & The Stolen Elk's full-length debut reflects this combined two decades of fully integrated experience and influences.

"I Don't Believe You" kicks off the album with chiming bells and an upbeat church hymn slowed down and matched to a barrage of processed chanting voices. The song morphs into a hypnotic guitar loop layered with ringing synths, guitar washes and ghostly vocals, all building to a cacophonous climax replete with bleating saxes, a buzz metal riff and shredded guitar. "Tower of Babble" begins with sounds of rainfall and something sounding like slowed-down Gregorian chants as a chiming guitar melody softly repeats, eventually giving way to a buzzing organ drone, a tribal drum beat and belted German vocals before taking a final sinister turn with an insistent snare roll propelling the song towards its grand finale. The album concludes with the side-long, three-part "First Rites, Last Communion" suite. Heavily comprised of processed Asian church ceremony field recordings accompanied by occasional guitar and keyboard statements, the piece eventually erupts into a maelstrom of noise blasts, wild guitar and ringing bells before settling into a series of long, drawn out tones.

Mastered by Graham Lambkin (ex-Shadow Ring), this album sounds like little else in the Weird Forest catalog.

WEIRD-068 Noveller - Glacial Glow LP
Noveller
Glacial Glow
(WEIRD-068)
LP
Sarah Lipstate is Noveller and Glacial Glow is her most assured, accomplished statement to date. Lipstate largely sheds the distortion and feedback present in much of her earlier work. Instead, she relies on instantly memorable melodies, a wider sonic palette, and excellent pacing to deliver arguably her best album.

Noveller announces her intentions from the opening track, appropriately titled "Entering", as the syncopated rhythm of the melody represents a new twist from her previous guitar work. This is only the hors d'oeuvre for the stunning "Glacial Wave", which drifts along serenely until Lipstate rains down gorgeous arpeggios like icy shards from the heavens. Other pieces feature sparse arrangements anchored by pulsing throbs which evoke a subtle, creeping anxiety more menacing than the feel-good retro-horror soundtracks making the rounds these days.

Throughout Glacial Glow, Lipstate exercises restraint and a fleeting melancholy feeling pervades the album. It says something about an album's quality when the closing track, "Ends", is chosen as the lead-off video. Ocean sounds combine with the lovely chord progression and guitar lines to create an uplifting, yet slightly wistful feeling and a perfect bookend to the record.

Design/layout by Chris Habib & Sarah Lipstate. Mastered by James Plotkin.

    WEIRD-058 M.B. - Symphony For A Genocide LP
    M.B.
    Symphony For A Genocide
    (WEIRD-058)
    LP
M.B., aka Maurizio Bianchi, has enjoyed a deserved renaissance in recent times as a new generation discovers his charred brand of industrial noise, particularly the artist's formative early 80's period before he disappeared in pursuit of religion. In the ensuing years, many of these early records became prized collector objects, garnering hundreds of dollars -- if they could even be found. Bianchi has since returned to creating music and many of those pricey releases have been re-issued on vinyl except for what's widely considered to be his seminal work from that time, SYMPHONY FOR A GENOCIDE. Weird Forest is proud to rectify this situation.

To the uninitiated, SYMPHONY may sound like so much noise with its unyielding factory-of-death buzzsaw sound making Throbbing Gristle's industrial music almost top-40 by comparison. But buried underneath the unrelenting martial rhythms and analog siren sounds is a great deal of musicality, including synth melodies and basic chord progressions. Bianchi uses all these elements at his disposal to create a gripping audio portrait of the grim subject matter.

Re-issue is strictly limited to 520 copies and is a near-exact reproduction of the original Sterile Records release, including hand-stamped labels and inserts just like the 1981 issue.

WEIRD-069 Corcoran, Kevin - Haptic Music c40 Tape
    Kevin Corcoran
    Haptic Music c40
    (WEIRD-069)
    Tape
Kevin Corcoran's official discography spotlights the wide range of his drumming repertoire -- witness the arty-free jazz punk stylings of Antennas Erupt! (S-S Records), the bombastic blasts on his various Weird Forest 7"s, the more subdued percussion on his Americana-cum-improv trio with Christian Kiefer and Tetuzi Akiyama (Digitalis) and most recently, the incredibly tight avant-rock drum beats featured with Garrincha & the Stolen Elk (Stunned). But left to his own devices, Corcoran is much more interested in subtle, quiet sounds and Haptic Music is the first release spotlighting solely his ideas. These pieces reflect his interest in percussion as timbre gestures (touching texture, sounding surfaces with objects, droning cymbals) where rhythm is not the major aspect but underscores or enables certain movements.

Haptic Music was recorded between 2008 and 2010. Acoustic and amplified percussion improvised and recorded live. Pro-dubbed chrome cassettes come with embossed paste-on covers and professional full-color j-card inserts.

The Preterite drops this fantastic 2xcassette release which sounds like it came from another world -- one where factories float in the sky and Willy Wonka's running for president. Something of a "piano" album, The Preterite takes this most hallowed of instruments and molds a fantastic aural clouds that take winding, angular paths on the way to building up a melodic, cacophonous maelstrom.

Weird-051cd McGuire, Mark - Tidings / Amethyst Waves CD
    Mark McGuire
    Tidings / Amethyst Waves
    (Weird-051cd)
    CD
Trying to put the last 15 years of music into context, you’d be hard pressed to get anyone to agree on a single thing. If anything, this period has been a collective convergence of all things cool-sounding: naïve experimentalism, academic composition, art-rock synthesis, electronic nihilism/flagellation, and, well, everything else. Mark McGuire could muddy anyones interpretation of the contemporary canon with his buddies in the triadic mega-unit, Emeralds, his collaborative outings in Sun Watcher and Skyramps (with Daniel “Oneohtrix Point Never” Lopatin), and his prolific, yet well-executed, solo work. ”Have you heard his shredability, incomprehensible astral traveling and meditative neutron stasis on any of those solo jams, the dude must be ancient!?” Truth is, Mark Mcguire is a youngin’, not a refugee of the ’70s. Nor is he mining unfamiliar territory; he produces something old and familiar, yet it sounds so fresh and necessary for today.

Originally released as limited edition cassettes and masterfully cleaned up for this definitive release by James Plotkin, Tidings/Amethyst Wavesfinds McGuire packing 60+ minutes with trance-inducing, melodic guitar intricacies, an occasional wall-of-squall reminiscent of Mizutani riding a thunder horse, and filaments of a drifting stratosphere where organic synthed-out solos are nestled in tight. With this release, Mark McGuire has hatched a true American Euro-vision utilizing major shifts in the ‘music as language’ paradigm. No joke, this is where Wyld Stallyns is heading in the year 2398 A.G. and Tidings/Amethyst Waves is as essential as anything in the Emeralds catalog.

Colored-vinyl version now sold out, only black vinyl version available.

Package boasts photography by Mark McGuire, with design by Aaron Winters.

Weird-053 Goldberg, Sam - Current LP
    Sam Goldberg
    Current
    (Weird-053)
    LP
Sam Goldbeg is a Cleveland, Ohio multi-instrumentalist/ composer who has been running in the garage rock/ electronic underground circles for the last half of the '00s. He also curates and operates the Pizza Night cassette label, one of the most beloved underground cassette headquarters of the midwest as of late. Unique, timeless, and clever constructions of sound created with many instruments like synthesizers, rhythm boxes, and electric guitars provide a wide scope of varied colored tones from release to release. This debut record, Current, is an early document of Sam's solo guitar work. Side A consists of a hazy and humid melodic stasis that may be known from the Emeralds/Sam Goldberg 2007 tour cassette. An untitled piece that evokes a sense of longing and discontent while simultaneously hitting the deep and raw channels of the subconscious past that bring an understanding to the spaces between experience and memory. A gorgeous wash of clouded, ringing guitar not unlike Glenn Branca's "Symphony No. 2." On the flip side another phantom composition played only a few times live and recorded over a year ago in a similar weightless, sky guitar fashion rounds out the double side long debut. "Carol" is a great example of massive tone landscapes that can be born with minimal processing and careful compositional dynamic. Indeed, the sound of the instrument remains quite impressive throughout the album. The universal longevity of this record, however, will lie in the perfect placement of simple musical practices like chord changes, timbre and dynamics. Current has a style quality all it 's own from the avant garde to pop rock with everything in between. No pretentions, no exponentiating contemporary concerns. Current stands as a pure and unwaivering document of self-expression, a characteristic that the all-time best albums have. It's a rare case when a music with no lyrics or vocals can pave a path to an extraordinary understanding to one's own augmented reality. Outstanding debut album that defies the past and future and only breathes in the present moment. — John Elliott, 12/01/09, Cleveland.

    Weird-033 Bianchi, Maurizio - M.B Das Platinzeitalter 2LP
    Maurizio Bianchi
    M.B Das Platinzeitalter
    (Weird-033)
    2LP
Have you ever looked into the abyss? Man, it’s scary! An infinite void of the blackest black where not even a gleam of light can escape its dark talons. Needless to say, it’s not the most popular destination, but hey, it is there. And believe me, sooner or later that day will come when you will sit on the cusp and fix your eyes on the vast nothingness that is everything. But until that hour beckons, you may as well prepare yourself by spinning Das Platinzeitalter by Maurizio Bianchi.

’Dark ambient’ barely captures what is engraved in these grooves. Loops from the history of dust, ancient as the catacombs and spectral like the last rays of hope. There’s an eerie calmness to all four sides of this LP. Timeless and inevitable as the setting sun, as if this music has always been here. Which it has. It was up to Bianchi to find it. This recording captures the never-ending decay of beauty at the point when it is realized that resistance is futile and the metamorphosis has begun. There are not many musicians who can distill this essence: early Zoviet France, Nature Unveiled-era Current 93, Lustmord and Andrew Chalk/Mirror to name a few, but Das Platinzeitalter sounds like it comes from hallowed grounds, the once sacred is now profane. It forces your head to turn toward the abyss. It’s up to you to open your eyes and look.

Then the next thing you know, it’s over. It’s all over. —Dennis Yudt

    CD-R
"Brian Faulkner was my introduction to great obscure music. I appeared on his legendary KDVS radio show "Nothing Exceeds Like Excess" way back when as a guest DJ after I donated to the radio station. I picked out a bunch of indie rock to play and a little free jazz and he proceeded to turn me on to the insane and freaked out nooks and crannies in that basement station of wonders that I never heard of. I was hooked. Anyway being North America's biggest Keiji Haino fan, he has been a jagged fucked-up noise monster on the guitar for a long time ... he gave me a CD-R of his 4-track Guitar Mulch that I still rock today and we used to jam with LBM members at the old Loft in town. Anyway finally got his ass in a band and here are some results. We got Daniel White in on this to play drums. I sit in with Daniel's other band Sucks sometimes ... he has natural thrash ability so I hired him for this group. Daniel also throws good-vibed shows at Funcastle with his lady Liz. I play electric sax on these recordings. It's total noise thrash molten lava core" —Chad Stockdale

    LP+7"
Glee. See that’s a word I rarely party with in my codex but it’s just the one that I would ascribe to Ganglians. Everytime I see these chaps play I come away with a big old grin on my world-weary face. How do they do it? Well it’s the lightheartedness in their playing ... the angelic Wilson-esque vocal harmonies ... then from out of nowhere come those West African guitar stylings! And yet I can never pin down this band’s sound ... not that that’s a bad thing. In fact it’s always been a sure sign for me that the music’s doing something right. From the lazy day musings of To June to the monumental yarn Valient Brave. Jam this on your next road trip or on your back porch drinking an Arnold Palmer. This is a record for summertime if ever there was one. It’s pop music in the best sense of the word ... paramount and perennial. Hyperborean Trenchtown
    (Weird-044)
    LP
Chris Madak may have been born after impact in a car crash, and his Hyperborean Trenchtown will enter the world in a similar fashion. The album resonates a future sound vision that can only come from an old soul destined to further pave the paths laid by electronic and minimalist pioneers. Thorough audio examinations covering every facet of sound/tone property as a whole will reveal astonishing new layers listen after listen. Undeniably pure processes of creating and sustaining sound visually, sonically and otherwise brings a mathematical and scientific accuracy that hasnt been seen since the days of Lovely Music Ltd. or GRM. The album’s two side-long cuts are divided into two displays of versatility with varied sound sources including amplified acoustic instruments, hand-made electronics, phonography, and more. Brilliant textures and audio hallucinogenic time/space wormholes create infinite listening possibilities for this album. Few albums can create such a disorienting tunnel that it sounds as if the record has multiple albums locked within itself — you can hear these sounds and interpret them in so many ways that only time can unlock its many possibilities. Great albums only gain significance and this is surely no exception. Listen to this record on your turntable and stop time completely or melt into the past or the future with it — your choice.

    Weird-037 Emeralds - Allegory of Allergies 2LP
    Emeralds
    Allegory of Allergies
    (Weird-037)
    2LP
"About a month ago, as I watched Emeralds levitate a packed house at Brooklyn's Glasslands, I couldn't help but wax a bit misty-eyed, recalling the years we all spent orbiting the basements of the upper midwest with a cabal of like-minded fuckups. This opportunity to revisit Allegory of Allergies isn't exactly helping me regain my composure, and for that, I'm profoundly grateful, insofar as time, distance, and a seriously killer record can put a pretty impressive sentimental gloss on virtually anything, from spacing out and driving two hours past the gig in a thunderstorm to blasting the Gods of Tundra c120 on a half-dead portable deck while scrambling to dodge a sketchy eviction threat. Those, apparently, were the days.

"In its formal aspect, Allegory shares much with the recent and justly lauded What Happened, though in nearly every other sense, they're night and day. Where the extended vignettes of What Happened share a certain crystalline expansiveness and astral sheen, Allegory offers a crumbling labyrinth that's at once humid and frigid, crammed to the gills with moss, lichen, cobwebs, brick dust, rotting boards, peeling paint, and narrow shafts of light. It's a blurry and bleary vision, in which John Elliott, Steve Hauschildt, and Mark McGuire improvise on synths, guitar, voice, and tapes like three cats batting at an enormous calder mobile, a sound thoroughly native to the moldering interiors and indigenous dystopian/psychedelic culture of the American Rust Belt.

"Those approaching this work for the first time will have much around which to warp/wrap their heads. Emeralds are possessed of a slow-burning, Cluster-like sense of patience, an accompanying willingness to assume the appearance of burbling sideways in low gear while stealthily turning the universe on its edge, a rare mastery of perspective and scale, and an ability to make audible the slipperiness of the slope between harmony and timbre. Just as crucially, they manage to be ambitious and sprawling without compromising their aura of raw immediacy and handmadeness. It is precisely this sort of fried grace that secures Emeralds' place in the history of vernacular experimental music and situates Allegory of Allergies squarely in its hallowed canon of epic double LPs." — Chris Madak

    Can't
    Private Time Part 2
    (Weird-022)
    LP
For me this is the ultimate Can’t LP. Its a sound cornucopia of everything Jessica Rylan does so beautifully... amazing scraped and destroyed analog synth-laden vocals, lovely singer/songwriter stylings with acoustic guitar, and Shaggs-style garage gusto! This record features Jessica’s own homemade synthesizers including the Little Boy Blue! One of my favorite Weird Forest releases to date!

Beautiful color covers by Aaron Winters and a fabulous inner sleeve with artwork by Jessica.
    Limited To 500 copies.

    Grouper
    Wide
    (Weird-027)
    LP
Grouper is Liz Harris and this is her second album Wide. Submerged in this music a vast pasture forms near a great sea just before dawn. the early morning vapors were everywhere hovering just above the ground. Soon the sun swells up and the vapors transmogrify into a tempest of hornets..the hornets envelope the sun with impressive fervor but it melts them into haze again and the vapors migrate out to the sea. Grouper has collaborated with Jandek, Xiu Xiu, Ilyas Ahmed, Six Organs of Admittance, Jorge Behringer, Badgerlore, and others. This is the vinyl edition of the cd released on Free Porcupine Society.

Beautiful tip-on style single pocket gatefold jackets featuring photography by Peter Harris.
Limited to 1000 copies (500 on swirled smoke-colored vinyl, 500 on black vinyl).

    Hair Police
    Drawn Dead
    (Weird-013)
    LP
What’s inside the putrid, rotting, decrepit bandages ruined by the slow feral decay of time... its in your ears, that noise that creeps up in one small, rat-like, continous tonality of frozen windshields cracking from the chill of mortality that pulsates louder and louder and you caress the bandaged corpse and the dust of the long-deadened flesh shuffles from the caked, pale red cloth and the pulses turn to howls which are slashed quiet by the bludgeoning sterility of your mundane existence. Take this with you under the dirt.

This is the vinyl version of the CD that was released on Hanson Records.

    Pump Kinn is Michelle.

Whether gliding on the diamond lakes on a porcelan swan or herding the wild equestrian hordes on top the tenebrous mountains she molds the loveliest concoctions of throat plumage confection and the most crepuscular cacophonous caterwauling of a thousand shrill stallions. (Weird-031)
    LP
The Flower Vato says: Sally Strobelight is a psychic soul sister who willl reach into you and sip you gently from the inside as you fall deeper under her thought vibration. Become one with the cough syrup ghost world, find peace through the unicorns as a disco dies slower than the speed of light. A tongue licks at your bullet hole as butterfly eyes bring thoughts forgot to my head. Invisable friends sailing the ribbons through thoughts of the curtain that hide that captian. Easter Pastel zig zags the black. Nico-philes and Glass Candy-heads rejoice.

Weird-007 Wood Wand & VV - Sunset Sleeves LP
    Wood Wand & VV
    Sunset Sleeves
    (Weird-007)
    LP
Wooden Wand & the Vanishing Voice command you to dissolve caps in Grandma Moses kool-aid and seep deep into a genuine American-psychedelic-industrial gospel — languid repetition of mechanical percussion, rural disrupted electronic meandering, haunting altruistic guitar melodies, hymns guided by deceased maritime constellations sucking life from borrowed resin — the sum of all parts is an exact, chance ability of preordained primitive precision: The way Metal Box/Second Edition should've sounded if the Godz weren't so crazy. Travel north archaic gypsies, gather desert sustenance — keep praying!!!

    CD-R
What would the soil say? A fair speculation from the land's oldest apostle..."God made the Earth and the Earth was round and the Earth stood still in it's roundness... thus gave rise to 'the color green'... the amorphic quality of this color sprang life ... the first sounds involved gurggling 'Cro-magnon' hemorages ... the rest is adequate history ... hamburgers hotdogs hermaphrodites haunted house huge hard hair ... this is my recollection, I am soil!" A true testament of a northern California freak-out unfurled for the rest of the world ... a live non-stop excavation of classic Impulse! ether fused a la' Cro-Magnon(artists alone decide ...) with a utilitarian nod to "New Weird-ness" and Finnish-psych-spooge... recorded in Davis, CA "Live in Studio A" Sept. 2004 ... 4 colors, 500 copies, collaborative artwork... why does acid cost so much? Definitely for fans of Avarus and No Neck Blues Band. Features members of Klondike & York, Antennas Erupt, My Whole Hand Was Wet, Tally Band, and Black Bottles.

Weird-008 DYAD Yellow Swans - Against Sleep and Nightmare LP
    DYAD Yellow Swans
    Against Sleep and Nightmare
    (Weird-008)
    LP
"Against Sleep and Nightmare" dares to be the most convincing and satisfying Yellow Swans allotment of discovery established to recorded media. Subtle layering of anti-glitch-transparent collage progressing through to climactic pseudo-psychedelic jam of brillant rainbow industrial micro-space. "Surreal Time" bowel massaging low end roar endures the harmonious fracture of minimal eeriness while coalescing inot brittle drone glaze erupting a scream-induced chasm of unearthly disgust and restlessness. Quite marvelous discovering a band that encompasses everything current and forgotten yet seems to surpass it all creating an uninhibited and significant block of time well spent! This is a reissue of the CD-R originally released in a scant edition of 100 copies on the Yellow Swans' own JYRK label.

Edition of 200 copies with white sleeves silkscreened with clear ink designed by Aaron Winters

    Weird-003 Kevin & Chad - Untitled 7
    Kevin & Chad
    Untitled
    (Weird-003)
    7"
This is the high and mighty speaker-shredding first from the duo of Chad Stockdale (Klondike and York, Living Breathing Music, Freebasers, DMPH) and Kevin Corcoran (Antennas Erupt, Get Get Go). The idea behind this album was to make a hardcore record but through free jazz idioms. I played my tenor through a rat pedal and Kevin got in touch with his inner hardcore monster for the drums. Chris Woodhouse recorded for maximum potency. This is a seven-inch of loud whirlwind sudden blasts of howling, house-flattening, molten meltdown .
“I’m very happy with this record. It came out just like I wanted.” — Chad Stockdale

    Fantastic see-through cover art

    Weird-Hand My Whole Hand Was Wet - S/T 7
    My Whole Hand Was Wet

    (Weird-Hand)
    7"
A poop stained, pajama wearing Mark E. Smith molested by the Muppet Babies would be a treat compared to this pile of rubbed rhubard crap. Skipping glitches massage the mundane into your palm (fair tempered crawl unit coaxing strangulated beatoffs grandeur), while the first dose of mutilated pop improv invokes flailing limpness in the vein of Costes and Men's Recovery Project. This would've fit uncomfortably onto the superb "I Hate The Pop Group" or "Killed By Death Swingalongamuck" comps. You wanna get wet? Northern California has never been so amused and constipated.

Weird-004 Demos Yellow Swans - Live in the Police State Capitol LP
    Demos Yellow Swans
Live in the Police State Capitol
    (Weird-004)
    LP
I'm extremely honored to release this one-sided twelve-inch by one of my favorite bands, D. Yellow Swans. 1/4" Tape, Guitar, Voice, Drum Machines, Microphones, Mixer Feedback, Various Electronics and Two Wonderful Fellas improvise off each other to create the mesmeric, volatile yet controlled chaos of electronic sear, rasp and burn. Full spectrum tonality, sonic exploration, the opening of new doors of perception, spiritual journey, and the establishment of new, meaningful shared cultural experience in the tradition of folk and native music from around the globe invoking Freedom, Happiness, Love, and the sharing and incitement of these feelings in others. Positivity. Total Liberation.

Cover art by Gabriel Mindel Saloman.
This is a one-sided live LP recorded at shows in Sacramento and Arcata, California. Only 500 copies pressed.

    Weird-AE Antennas Erupt - S/T 7
    Antennas Erupt
    S/T
    (Weird-AE)
    7"
The first 7" (full length vinyl due out on S-S Records) from Sacramento's finest utopian non-jazz band, Antennas Erupt. Their spectral sound of yore hovers somewhere between what's available and what's not. Past gestures giving way to new compositional non-jazz explorations. I got stoned one night and decided them as Charles Ives conducting the Portsmouth Sinfonia interpretting the better part of the ESP/Actuel catalogue, Mingus meltdowns, Ascension, solo Dolphy, and Messengers fluidity. They've created something wholly unique and beautiful and groovy. Saxes, cello, and drums combine to make Magical Energy Fields of love, joy, and vigor!

    200 copies on clear vinyl.

    Weird-KY Klondike & York - S/T 7
    Klondike & York
    S/T
    (Weird-KY)
    7"
The debut seven-inch record. "Klondike and York are a Sacramento, Ca. duo comprised of Chad Stockdale and Nate Beier. How they got their name I cannot guess, but they do have a record out and it's quite nice. Of special interest is the 9:04 tune on the second side, "Angry Gull", which has some very bizarre percussion touches and a very spitty/sputty tenor attack that moves through some of Mats Gustafsson's territory without rifling his pockets. Necessarily lo-fi, due to the singles length, this single's still a must for anyone stocking a free jazz juke, and it'd be interesting to find out more about these guys. They lack some of the military, high energy buzz-cut feel that many current young American improvisers seem to manifest, replacing that with a kind of ecstatic underpinning; and I can't help but think that's a good thing." -Byron Coley, The Wire Nov. 2002
