Debut release on our new Blackest Bootleg labels releasing live recordings. The bootleg was recorded back in August 2008 at The Shakespeare in Sheffield, a great venue that played host to Acid Mothers first show in Sheffield, and it was so packed, the floor was literally moving underneath the crowd, the room was like a sauna, every single person dripping with sweat, it was one of the busiest shows I'd been too in Sheffield in a long time. I remember there being some total hippies down the front going so nuts, it was like their dream come true to see Acid Mothers. And, of course, it was INSANELY loud. This release captures that, the sheer volume AMT were playing at for the size of the room was crazy. I remember several months after, a guy I know said he'd heard there was a recording of it, and then a few months from then he said he'd managed to get a hold of it and he'd got a copy for me. After months I managed to get it, it was on DVD as it was too long to fit on a CD, so the guy had said he'd literally said he'd sat in front of the TV and listened to the 80+ minutes staring at a blank screen. That must've been a hell of an experience. I managed to get a hold of it in the end, and edit to a perfect 79 minute release just cutting of a few minutes of the encore. This double LP collects those 79 minutes of the recording, 6 tracks including two awesome versions of Pink Lady Lemonade, and other classics like Heart of Earth and Space Disco. The line up for the show was Pika (Afrirampo), Tabata Mitsuru, Hugashi Hiroshi, Shimura Koji, and Kawabata Makoto. Both Pika and Shimura played drums, so the set was seriously heavy as you will find out when you get this spinning... Be warned there are a couple of points in this where the sound goes a little crackly and distorted, but only very, very briefly, and it does get pretty loud at a few points. Just like a true bootleg should be!
Edition of 250 copies on printed card sleeves featuring cover shot of the band. Pressed on 140gram virgin vinyl.

In A Flash Everything Comes Together As One...
(Black Truffle)

SOLD OUT

Recorded one year after this international trio's first release ('Tima Formosa' BT04), 'in a flash everything comes together as one there is no need for a subject' presents the entirety of a live performance that took place at SuperDeluxe, Tokyo on January 24th 2010. Haino is in truly phenomenal form herein, foregoing the single-instrument explorations of much of his recent solo work and his more peripheral role on the trio's first release for a virtuosic and wide-ranging performance that takes in piercing leads, delicate strumming, jarring lap-steel interjections and his inimitable vocal caresses and howls. O'Rourke's bass sometimes merges with Haino's guitar to form crumbling walls of noise, at other times his dark ostinatos and runs add melodic weight. Ambarchi's drumming moves from delicate, propulsive cymbal work to endless thundering streams of free-pulse pounding. The title of the release is appropriate: from the spacious and unpredictable slow-mo interactions of the first piece (reminiscent of some of the greatest Fushitsusha moments) to the wild free-riffing that concludes the performance, the trio seems uncannily attuned to one-another's movements, and everything truly 'comes together as one'. -- Francis Plagne, Melbourne, Jan 2011.
Released as a limited edition double LP in a lavish gatefold with printed inner sleeves, design by Stephen O'Malley with high quality live shots by Ujin Matsuo and a stunning cover-image by noise-guitar blaster and internationally renowned visual artist Marco Fusinato.
Aaron Dilloway - Psychic Driving Tapes tape
Aaron Dilloway
Psychic Driving Tapes
(Hanson)
tape

SOLD OUT

"Psychic driving was a psychiatric procedure in which patients were subjected to a continuously repeated audio message on a looped tape, in order to alter their behaviour. In psychic driving, patients were often exposed to hundreds of thousands of repetitions of a single statement over the course of their treatment. They were also concurrently administered muscular paralytic drugs such as curare in order to subdue them for the purposes of exposure to the looped message(s). The procedure was pioneered by Dr. D. Ewen Cameron, and utilised and funded by the U.S. CIA's MKULTRA program in Canada.

The psychic driving procedure was a chronological precursor to Cameron's depatterning, the latter involving massive doses of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) combined with similarly large doses of psychedelic drugs (such as L.S.D.). The intent was to break down the subject's personality — theoretically psychic driving could then be used with some efficacy in establishing a new personality. In Cameron's depatterning, the ECT would often continue to be administered despite the manifestation of convulsive fits, which were consensually considered to be contraindications to normal and safe ECT procedure. Such biologically and psychologically devastating procedures, adopted internationally by the psychiatric establishment, were largely abolished by the time the CIA was brought before a Senate Hearing (1977) for its involvement and funding of Cameron's experimental activities — as part of the MKULTRA program."

Aethenor - En Form For Bla 2LP

$19.50

SOLD OUT

Aethenor is comprised of Stephen O'Malley (Sunn0))), KTL), Daniel O'Sullivan (Ulver, Mothlite, Guapo), Kristoffer Rygg (Ulver) and Steve Noble (N.E.W., Company, etc.). Documenting three gigs in Oslo recorded in 2010, the album is deep and weird, with liquid sounds juddering around the occasionally identifiable percussion or Rhodes motif. In the evolution from a side project / studio group to a frequently working live act, Aethenor kept their sound intact, taking the musique-concrete-style transitions and "what's that sound" ethos of their three previous efforts directly to the stage. Noble, having spent a couple of decades playing drums with Derek Bailey and other well-known UK improvisers, moves the music along subtly, keeping much of the focus on the burbling sound mass. O'Malley's guitar, an instrument of extreme viscera in Sunn0))), is used with restraint, providing occasional low menace but mostly mixing it up with O'Sullivan's thematic lines and Rygg's sound treatments. The overall effect is atmospheric rather than sedate--something like a modern, small group version of Miles Davis' classic "He Loved Him Madly" or Nurse with Wound's Spiral Insana. Other than perhaps Supersilent, no one else is working this sonic vocabulary today.
Designed by O'Malley, the deluxe double-LP version is pressed on white vinyl and packaged with printed inner sleeves.

The Soft Wave
(Smalltown Supersound)
LP
$17.50

SOLD OUT

EURO IMPORT. Recorded as Alexis Georgopoulos (the man behind the music of Arp) relocated from San Francisco to New York, The Soft Wave is expansive in scope, unfolding like a collection of short stories or filmic vignettes, each piece building upon the other. The Soft Wave incorporates guitars, piano, flute, and Ebows to create a dense brocade of sound. Georgopoulos even steps up to the mic for the gorgeous centerpiece 'From A Balcony Overlooking The Sea,' calling to mind classic John Cale and Brian Eno. Though Georgopoulos still has a knack for creating environments in which you want to recline hammock-style, he's also peppered The Soft Wave with soft blasts of blessed-out fuzz. Recorded to 2-inch tape, it's warm glow and blown-out formalism will undoubtedly appeal to a broad, sophisticated range of tastes.

$19

SOLD OUT

"Canzoni dal Laboratorio del Silenzio Cosmico" is an outstanding document in the long and complex Bee Mask discography, part of an astounding body of work that's been brewing since the mid-00's, and a carefully and meticulously composed album on par with the classics of the Lovely Music and INA-GRM catalogs. Straying from the status quo of improvised "one take" synthesizer music flooding the underground electronic community today, Chris Madak has created an elaborate and captivating work, a soundtrack to an event shrouded in mystery and beauty, at once larger than life in it's grandeur and cryptic in its reserve. Released as a limited edition cassette on Gift Tapes last year and now where it should be, on the longest-surviving phonographic format.

The enigma that is Black Swan has emerged from the shadows to deliver its second work. Awash with chilling ambience, found sounds and haunting samples, The Quiet Divide reins in the phantasmagoria, examining the blurred in-between, the darkness that lies at the divide. Creeping ever so slowly out of the confined spaces of its previous work, In 8 Movements, Black Swan moves further into the crevice, mining territory unbefitting to most composers. Upon surfacing from the muck and grime, the resulting work is disquieting and poignant, exposing the listener to the inner workings of the desolate in hope that they will never have to plunge themselves into it.

Aidan Baker
Plague of Fantasies
(Blackest Rainbow)
LP
$22

SOLD OUT

Brand new solo material from Aidan Baker, one of the most prolific musicians recording at the moment, Aidan creates such a wide array of musical sound its hard to keep track, not only does he perform as part of the fantastic Nadja, as well as in projects such as ARC, and collaborating with other luminaries such as Tim Hecker, he releases a whole host of solo material. This new solo record is really something, pulling together all the genres he works in, fusing heavy drones, with broken drums beats, buried vocals, dreamy ambient manoeuvres, and moments referring to post rock build across the two twenty plus minute tracks on this new recording. Baker's genre blending somehow builds a sound that somehow sounds delicate and beautiful, but also at times sounds gloomy and melancholy. Plague of Fantasies is a rare vinyl release from Aidan Baker.

From Our Mouths A Perpetual Light
(NNF)
LP
$13

SOLD OUT

REISSUED!!! Since first bearing witness to BARN OWL's mythically desolate amplifier alchemy last year, NNF has been rabid fans/fanatics. But like lots of badass bands, BO are a rolling stone, heavy on the transformation tip, and the BO of today is an altered beast from the one that folkily fingerpicked Bridge To The Clouds and their self-titled disc way back when. And in case we're not being clear: this is a beautiful thing. From Our Mouths A Perpetual Light burns with the sun-dead majesty of a Death Valley burial ground, all wasted waterless expanse and cracked earth smoke blowing in the dry wind. Heavy western drone revelations bleed into forlorn guitar drift, downcast percussion plods across the plain, a skull on its side lies in the sands. EVAN CAMINITI and JON PORRAS have somehow flawlessly evolved Barn Owl into a blazing new universe, and From Our Mouths... is the first mission statement from their new spectral/aesthetic outpost, a stunning and timeless eight-song suite of grim cinematic electricity. Tune in, drop dead, rot on. In swank matte jackets with 'four-armed demon warrior-yogi' artwork by the band.

This is the second album from James Leyland Kirby's alias The Caretaker, following up 2008's Persistent Repetition Of Phrases (HAFTW 003CD). Leading medical research explains how Alzheimer's patients who endure increasing memory loss can still recall songs from their distant past. The prefrontal cortex is among the last brain regions to atrophy. With this in mind, The Caretaker once again recalls fifteen occasions where memories were locked in a timeless and haunting loop. The Caretaker is the work of James Leyland Kirby, also sometimes known as Leyland Kirby, The Stranger and V/VM.

SOLD OUT

Quite simply one of my all time favourite releases on Blackest Rainbow from one of this generations most amazing artists gets the upgrade from cassette to double vinyl LP, featuring the original 6 tracks from the original release, along with an additional brand new amazing track. The original edition on tape received some fantastic reviews, so its great to finally have this out on vinyl, as it really is a superb recording, which came out around one of Christina's most amazingly active recording periods, self releasing fantastic discs like Masque Femine, Two Nights Film and A Blossom Fell as well as Kranky releasing Original Darkness in 2008. Texas Blues Working features six tracks of stunningly haunting guitar and vocals, creating an immensely deep and emotional listening experience. The previously unreleased track, the sublime 21 minute 'Ladyfriend', is another example of Christina's incredible voice and guitar playing. Her voice is just unreal, so deeply emotional and mournful it gives you goosebumps.
Pressed on heavyweight virgin vinyl and housed in a gatefold sleeve featuring a series of black and white photographs by Joe Blanchard.

Recorded by the three piece of CHRIS BUSH, ERIC LANHAM, and BEN ZOELLER, this collection draws a narrative thread through their past releases on Arbor, Students of Decay, Mountaain, and their own Smooth Tapes imprint. It's not so much a summation of their back catalog as it is a spotlight on a particularly fluid and holographic area of their sound. The result is a flowing and coherent collection of nuanced electronic mess. A real trip and an excellent demonstration of the Cabo ethos.

Matt Carlson
Particle Language
(Draft)
LP
$14

SOLD OUT

Matt Carlson is one-half of the wonderful Golden Retriever, which should be enough for you to buy this record. Outside the bounds of that group, Carlson is found here exploring more abstract territory, deftly maneuvering between free synth explorations and more recognized rhythmic/melodic forms. What I love about synthesized sounds is its characteristic ability to sound completely unnatural and alien while still being able to evoke in listeners feelings of the familiar. Carlson is indeed a master of the modular synth and this one's got it all -- low frequency pulses, robotic schizophrenia and fluid flatulence. You need this.

DRAFT is pleased to announce the release of Matt Carlson's solo debut LP release, Particle Language. Following up his stellar solo works for Gift Tapes, including Stereo Face and Gecko Dream Levels, Carlson advances his signature electronic compositions, venturing into weirder, tweaked realms of morphing synthesis and bent perception. Particle Language guides the listener through an effervescent cauldron of unstable energies and molten, robotic detritus into a shifting stereoized vacuum-space. Sounds effortlessly arch and skim this reflective pathway, propelling us into the depths of our unconscious minds. Embedded with outsider music reference points and metaphysical undercurrents, Carlson's modular synthesizer mastery and ingenious use of tape and vocoder has unearthed grey - void atmospheres overflowing with otherworldly aural apocrypha—a uniquely warped vision.

Carousell - Black Swallow & Other Songs LP
Carousell
Black Swallow & Other Songs
(Digitalis)
LP
$17.50

SOLD OUT

Originally issued on Sustain Release in the criminally low run of 100 CDs, Black Swallow & Other Songs is a soft and sparse exercise in understated melodies. This is music rich in texture and heavy on the emotional impact it makes. The nearly-nine minute "Artery" opens the album and slowly coalesces from a fractured whisper to leave its marks in your skin. Blurry violin notes stretch to the breaking point while Skelton loosely strums and plucks his guitar into a warm, aural embrace. The title track continues with this theme, but adds a heavy dose of nostalgic melancholy to the proceedings. It's like you have to look back, accept things and head down the winding path to a new future. Even with a certain somberness at the heart of these songs is an underlying mirth. On the closing suite, "Owl Lanterns" and "The Clearing," we get a full dose of this hopefulness. A child's laughter flickers by while the bowed strings add an unfaltering lightness. Skelton's guitar plucks are floating on clouds, passing by with a buoyant spirit. As Autumn Grieve's wordless vocals bring everything to a close there is nowhere else to go but up. Her voice is the exclamation mark, powerful and restrained as it leads the minimal bowed & plucked strings to rest.Black Swallow & Other Songs is a potent mix of darkness and light, expertly crafted by one of the UK's premier composers. Even if Skelton operates under multiple guises and pseudonyms, each project has its own identity. With Carousell, he's ready to break your heart so he can put it back together in the end.
Originally released as a limited-to-100 CD on his own Sustain Release label. Newly mastered for vinyl and cut at D+M Berlin for optimal sound.

(Blackest Rainbow)
LP
$21.50

SOLD OUT

Second vinyl LP from this formerly active American duo of Will Long and Danielle Baquet-Long, which also happens to be the second LP from Celer on Blackest Rainbow. Vestiges Of An Inherent Melancholy follows on from the recent pairing of releases on Basses Frequencies and features 2 sides of unearthed recordings that were created between December 2006 and July 2008. These two sides find the duo creating some truly beautiful drone works with their use of an organic and electronic palette of instrumentation; cello, violin, pipe organ, electronics, tape, field recordings, samples, and mixing board. This really is a standout side from Celer, pulling together their variety of sounds to make a heart breaking collage of sounds falling between beautiful dream tones and heavier dark moments. Vestiges Of An Inherent Melancholy again pushes Celer further to the front of modern minimal composition, proving that they were one of the most interesting, consistently outstanding, and intriguing acts around in recent years, creating some of the finest and most beautiful, fragile drone records around. The full experience of a Celer release is complete with accompanying titled fragmented sections for the side long pieces, and striking cover photography by Danielle.

What if Catholicism didn't come into existence until 1970? Well, traditional church music would have been written on synths instead of organs and it might have sounded something like this. For some reason, these impressions kept coming to me as I listened to this Charlatan LP. Lovely set of melodic synth pieces from Tulsa's Brad Rose, aka the North Sea & 1/2 of Altar Eagle.

A warm, filled with rich tones, re-issue of one of the earliest tapes of Charlatan. After the Triangles Lp on his own Digitalis label this is Brad Rose's second vinyl release under his new solo project moniker. Synthclouds and starchords on a carpet of white hiss. Brad Rose is one of the most active personas in the current adventurous contemporary music scene. As label honcho of Digitalis records / limited and online magazine Foxy Digitalis he's constantly in search of exciting new groups/artists. Add to that numerous solo and collaborative projects and you can rightly consider him as one of the spearheads of the experimental underground scene of the last five years. This release marks one of the highlights from his output last year, now rightly re-issued on heavy vinyl with two bonus tracks!

SOLD OUT

CHARLIE NOTHING was the fractured-psyche pseudonym of author, father, horsekeeper, organic farmer, beekeeper, philosopher and clown CHARLES MARTIN SIMON, inventor of the dingulator (guitar sculptures made of the metal from American cars). The second Charlie Nothing LP, originally issued by Everitt Enterprises, thematically follows The Psychedelic Saxophone of Charlie Nothing (Takoma, 1967) with two side-long flute-based instrumentals. Palpably preserved on these sides of Nothing is the air of a real-time dropout scene. It is a wonder that Outside / Inside circulated at all beyond the vacuum in which it was created. Nothingness, a California existentiality looping back on itself, preserved and disseminated as evidence. There are indeed very few records like these.
Chubby Wolf - Turkey Decoy LP

Turkey Decoy
(Digitalis)

$18

SOLD OUT

Chubby Wolf was the moniker used by the late Dani Baquet-Long of Celer for her subdued world of sound. With the help of Dani's husband and Celer's other half, Will Long, the final Chubby Wolf recordings are finally seeing the light of day, posthumously. Turkey Decoy represents some of her most accessible work. "Cantankerous Baby" opens the set with cybernetic clouds -- it's like endlessly floating through an unknown haze built around processed vocals and sample-ridden electric guitar. As you continue dreaming through the morose romanticism of pieces like "Prescient Inspiration," there's an understated sensuality that weaves its way into the music. "If There's An Elephant In The Room" pulls back the curtain and reveals a breathless aftermath punctuated by distant piano chords and sprawling drones. Each swell of Baquet-Long's voice makes you want to avert your eyes, unsure if it's something you're supposed to see. Closing out the album, "Scalloped Toes" and "Intrusively Coexisting" wrap things up with an elegant sweetness as everything comes full circle. The former is bathed in warm, relaxing tones that bleed into the barking and howling of Dani's beloved wolves that begin the last song on the album. "Intrusively Coexisting" is more gloomy and leaves lingering questions about all that came before it. It's the right way to end such a raw album -- each layer removed like an article of clothing, until there's nothing left to hide behind.

RESTOCKED! "I've known Joe for close to 15 years—his audio output for a few more. His composition techniques, recording and editing methods, and persistent refinement and redefining of his aural goals has helped to define a body of work that I firmly believe only few artists could hope to match. After a handful of releases on C.I.P., ranging from full-length CD to one-sided 7-inch, my resolve solidified that Joe was a contemporary artist whose work deserved the focus, breadth, and depth of a multiple LP release. The all-new material in this collection includes fractured electronics, rich multi-level drones, digital bite, the sounds of decaying technology, analog twists and turns, and recording experiments and documents—plus some other aural surprises that I leave to the listener's discretion as to whether they can be classified as 'pleasant' or 'otherwise.'"

SOLD OUT

It's hard to believe that six years have gone by since Deaf Center's Pale Ravine hit the shelves. In the time that's passed, the distinct melodies of Norwegians Erik Skodvin and Otto Totland have become almost synonymous with a specific shard of mysterious imagery so it feels high time that the duo should return to add a new next chapter to their shadowy story. In contrast to Skodvin and Totland's previous work, Owl Splinters was recorded in a studio setting (Nils Frahm's Durton studio, to be exact), and the lo-fidelity, haphazard techniques of their early recordings are now all but gone. With the benefit of some high-end engineering and analog equipment, Skodvin and Totland's murky compositions have been transformed from sketches into glorious widescreen spectacles. The blackened, scraping tone of Skodvin's strings ring out on the album's opener "Divided" before seismic bass drones push up from beneath with a cacophonous, earthy clarity. This is the same Deaf Center we fell in love with all those years ago, but bigger and more powerful than ever before. Between these epic compositions, the two musicians take time to give their own solo instruments the time to breathe -- Totland on the piano and Skodvin on the cello. These small vignettes are crucial to the overall narrative of Owl Splinters, allowing a crack of sunlight through the oppressively bleak atmosphere. Everything slots into place on the album's centerpiece "The Day I Would Never Have" -- piano and cello tumble into each other, forming a dense, affecting cloud of sound. Echoes of half-remembered horror movies, love songs and the dark arts come together in a Norwegian cauldron to reveal something that at its heart is deeply moving and beautiful. Deaf Center are back, and Owl Splinters might just be their most defining statement to date.
Includes a bonus CD of new interpretations of the album from Erik Skodvin's Svarte Greiner project.

(Modern Love)
3LP
$53

SOLD OUT

The Modern Love label presents a limited edition 3LP featuring the triptych of albums released by Demdike Stare in 2010 (Forest Of Evil, Liberation Through Hearing, Voices Of Dust). Demdike Stare is a project made up of two insatiable vinyl collectors based in the north of England: Sean Canty (who works for the esteemed Finders Keepers label) and Miles Whittaker (a long-time producer and DJ who has released music under the MLZ moniker and as part of Pendle Coven). The music Demdike Stare make is hard to pin down, based largely around archival musical sources ranging from obscure library records to long-forgotten jazz, early electronic, and industrial recordings, alongside an array of Iranian, Pakistani, Turkish and Eastern European material largely unknown in the Western world. Demdike Stare absorb and re-align these found sounds via their ever-expanding array of analog machines, ending with something that is in part plunderphonic, but ultimately completely new. Their music has sometimes been lumped in with the hypnagogic, hauntological and, most recently, "witch house" movements, but ultimately, Demdike Stare should appeal to anyone with an interest in everything from classic KPM Library records through to the music of Basic Channel and all the way to the smudged, altered-realities of James Ferraro and The Caretaker. That is, at least until the next record, when the frames of reference might just change up and take them somewhere completely different. Three individually shrink-wrapped LPs bound with a metallic print obi-strip. Mastered and cut by Lupo at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. Limited to 400 copies for the world.

SOLD OUT

I've never been one of those armchair sound-travelers myself. Say the words "world music" and it immediately conjures up a specific, neutron-bomb-worthy scenario in my mind, involving a jester's hat, a farmer's market, and a pan-pipe enema. So it's strange that I find myself drawn to this LP of all-instrumental solo oud recordings by Derek Monypeny, the first-ever release on his new Raheem label. Side 1 consists of six very stark, intimate composed pieces. Almost as if Jandek took a trip to Mississippi via Istanbul and Calcutta, but had somebody help him get tuned up first. Real loner atmosphere here, authentic ache, no steel drums in sight. Side 2 is made up of two long, tranced-out hunks of what the late Mr. Vliet once dubbed "psychedelic Bromo-Seltzer." The last song, "Sobek" is an ecstatic 12-minute-plus undersea raga with crazed percussion, everything run through a severe phase-wah wringer that will scatter seeds and stems all over your study. To sum up: This is one of those out-of-nowhere, higher-minded head scratchers that everybody loves. I salute Mr. Monypeny, and hope that Jeff Lynne lends him that spaceship from the Out Of The Blue tour sooner rather than later. -Bix Glanz, The Yellow Front Journal, spring 2011

Eggy Records is definitely one of my favorite tape labels going right now. Maybe because, like Weird Forest, Raf refuses to dwell in one genre so you never know exactly what you're going to get but it's always interesting and often times, amazing.

    Rise of the Elklink
    (KYE)
    LP
    $14

    SOLD OUT

The Rise of Elklink originally appeared as a cassette on the storied Polyamory label in 1999. Behind the ambiguous moniker lurked core Shadow Ring member Graham Lambkin, aided by Adris Hoyos with a cameo from fellow Shadow Ring bandmate Tim Goss. Although The Rise of Elklink was produced in tandum with The Shadow Ring's Lindus LP, the two projects were different in intent. Song form and narration are replaced by walls of quiet, crumbling vocal concrete, meaningless stoned monologues and adjacent audio seepage, captured to 4-track in the backroom of a small Cuban crèche in Miami FL. This LP reissue restores all six tracks from the original cassette, and adds the Elklink contribution to the Colour In Absence Sound CD comp from the same year.
Lovingly remastered by Jason Lescalleet at Glistening Labs, The Rise of Elklink arrives in a sleeve design based on the original j-card with a deluxe insert reproducing Brad Sonder's classic period review, in a hand-numbered edition of 500 copies.

After the runaway success of their Does It Look Like I'm Here? album, Editions Mego is chuffed to release these vintage synth-guitar improvisation jams recorded straight to tape, 2007-2008. LP
    $20

    SOLD OUT

For those who bought the Wizards re-issue LP and wondered what the big deal was about, Ancient Minimal Meditations will put those questions to rest. An apt title if there was one, this record is definitely minimal and meditative and at 30 years old, even ancient by today's Twitter standards. Spectacular set of minimal synth excursions that reward deep listening.

Re-issue of the AMM tape recorded between 1981 and 1985 by JD Emmanuel, a new age composer who has received a lot of praise from people like Lieven Martens and John Olsen. These recordings signify Emmanuel's praise to the course of the day. Starting off slowly, with morning synth meanderings, walking through midday, running in the evening and closing the day with midnight meditation. "Somewhere hidden in the deepest part of the Self is that special place, where One can go within to the most ancient part of one's Self and connect with the origin of Self. Ancient Minimal Meditations reaches into that special place of creation of the Self and its Oneness with the Creator of All."

    SOLD OUT

EURO IMPORT. Endless Summer, originally released in 2001 by Mego, was a breakthrough album for CHRISTIAN FENNESZ—the album which brought his name and music towards the first steps of mainstream recognition. Following on from the more experimental Hotel Paral.lel and the Beach Boys-homaged Plays single, Endless Summer brought the guitars more to the front, the electronics shimmered more, and the melodies shined more brightly. It went on to become a classic of its time, topping many end-of-year polls.
Remastered, expanded double LP version. This version features new artwork by TINA FRANK, based on the original 2001 Mego release. Contains "Ohne Sonne" and "47 Blues," previously only available on the Japanese CD versions, as well as a new, extended version of "Happy Audio," exclusive to this release. Cut at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin.

    SOLD OUT

FORMA (Mark Dwinell, Sophie Lam, & George Bennett) emerged on the NYC minimal synth scene in 2010 with a singular vision of cosmic Krautrock for a new age. On their eponymous debut LP, the Brooklyn-based electronics trio merges the melodic flow and primitive rhythms of their motorik predecessors with the hypnotic drones of minimalism, creating an intricate work both addicting and rewarding with repeat listens. Like many of the LP's 11 tracks, the churning and relentless "FORMA237B" draws its energy from a precarious equilibrium between structural rigidity and free improvisation, a dynamic at the heart of FORMA's universe. With lush, distant soundscapes as interludes between these peaks, FORMA's inaugural full-length is a harmonious and expansive expression of the enduring power of kosmische musik. Mark Dwinell and Sophie Lam: (Roland RS-09, Roland SH-1000, Roland RE-101, Yamaha CS-15, Crumar DS-2, Oberheim SEM, DSI Morpho, Moog LP, Farfisa Compact Combo), George Bennett (Roland TR-707, Alesis HR-16B).

    God Was Like, No
    (Barge)

    SOLD OUT

UK IMPORT. Ben & Isaac began The Fun Years in 2004. In the intervening years, they have made some of the most memorable and distinctive drone-pop albums to have come our way, evolving from layered ambience to a hybrid sound that's impossible to pigeonhole. Their setup of synths, turntables and guitar has lent their music a quality that's halfway between the haunted loops of Philip Jeck and the porous wall of sound so typical of My Bloody Valentine, without really sounding like either. Their drones are forever engaging and never quite follow the trajectory you'd assume or expect, often bursting into violent shards of sound. After 2008's critically-acclaimed Baby, It's Cold Inside, several festival appearances and contributions to Kompakt's Pop Ambient series, The Fun Years now return with a new album, their finest to date. Ben and Isaac haven't lived in the same city for several years, so their recording sessions have necessarily become less frequent and more intense. Splitting time between Ben's makeshift recording studios and Isaac's bedroom tomb, The Fun Years spent marathon recording sessions constructing, blurring and honing their sound. These sessions, coupled with some adventurous road tests performing the pieces in such uncharted venues as an air traffic control tower and the guts of a Richard Serra sculpture, imbues the album with a rich patina seldom heard in new drone experiments. This is most visibly displayed in the first half of the record, where shorter songs fizz with melodic repetition and almost traditional structures. The second half, by contrast, showcases a more harsh and artificial tone, offsetting the serenity of the opening with a more aggressive sound palette punctured with slow and dense skittering decaying into sparse passages and layered synth meditations, acting as a visceral yet cathartic fade-out for this wonderful album.
Limited one-time only vinyl pressing of 500 copies for the world. Unique artwork and labels for the LP version.

    SOLD OUT

The third LP by the now legendary GROUP DOUEH. Group Doueh have been playing in and around their native Dakhla, in the Western Sahara for over 27 years. This LP showcases a different side to Group Doueh's far-reaching arsenal of sounds. The songs represented on this album adhere to the roots of Saharoui music—drawing from the classical repertoire of ancestral Mauritanian musical modes. Using the traditional Moorish instruments such as the tinidit (three string Mauritanian lute), ardin (kora-like harp played traditionally by women), tbal (clay drum) and the kass (tea glasses) along with guitar and Korg synth, Group Doueh manage to attain heights of spiritual poetry that this music aspires to convey. Doueh’s wife HALIMA JAKANI’s ardin playing and most importantly, her vocal prowess, take this music to blissful and exalted realms. Doueh's tinidit and guitar overlays showcase the technical virtuosity and command that this master has over the region's stringed instruments. This is the music of Group Doueh's roots and the band truly takes these traditions to cosmic heights.
Recorded by Group Doueh and HISHAM MAYET on location in Dakhla, West Sahara in 2010. This limited edition vinyl LP comes in a beautiful full-color gatefold jacket.

    Tragedy & Geometry

    SOLD OUT

Perhaps the least prolific and quietest of the three members of Cleveland trio EMERALDS, STEVE HAUSCHILDT is usually found at their live performances playing the serious scientist as foil to the other two members more animated stage presence. As a teen, Steve bypassed the typical young music fan obsessions over punk and hardcore musics, drawn instead towards mid-late '90s techno/electro-revivalism and finding himself alone in an electronic universe of his own choosing. Steve has always considered himself more of an artist than a musician, and sees his work both in group and solo settings as much a visual experience as it is an aural one. The title Tragedy & Geometry is an ambiguous but subtle reference to Melpomene (Muse of Tragedy) and Polyhymnia (Muse of Geometry), or more specifically the collision/overlap of what they invoke. The opening track is also a direct reference to "Polyhymnia, Muse of Eloquence", the painting by the French artist Charles Meynier on display at the Cleveland Museum of Art. The album is a treatise on the idea that technology is becoming more disposable as it's becoming more accessible, and how this circumstance has a more evident/direct effect on the interpersonal, i.e. relations, with others in the so-called 'Age of Information.' What results is a gorgeous, flowing, floating world of post-kosmische musik, Steve Hauschildt's first widely available release, and his first major statement as a solo artist.

    EZEKIEL HONIG
    Folding In On Itself
    (Type)
    LP
    $17.50

    SOLD OUT

Describing the musical output of Ezekiel Honig is always the hardest part. It's related to techno, but the pulsing 4/4 beats are pushed so far into the background that they simply become another texture in the sprawling ambience. And that doesn't mean to say the music is 'ambient' either – the structures are far deeper than musical wallpaper that achieves that label right now. New York-based Honig's latest album and Type debut 'Folding In On Itself' doesn't make his music any easier to describe but does a lot to clarify the mood. This is deeply melancholy music, and while it doesn't revel in sadness, it conveys a sense that the things we grew up with and see disappear can never be recaptured. Memory and the corruption or distortion thereof is at the core the record, and like the cover which is made up of hazy family snaps of a changing Manhattan, Honig has tried to capture a sense of entropy in his quickly disintegrating city. Using a palette of locally recorded environmental samples, decayed acoustic instruments and the unusual, clattering percussion that has become his signature, 'Folding In On Itself' is probably Honig's most measured and defining record. Elements of his previous work are still present, heard most obviously the breakthrough 'Surfaces of a Broken Marching Band', but every tiny part has been trimmed and honed with a selfless attention to detail. From the lilting processed horns and clipped percussion on 'Subverting the Memory of Your Surroundings' to the noisy, slowly decomposing piano of 'Drafting Foresight', there is a sense that Honig has distinct story to tell, and that every track on the album is a unique part of the same object. Far from a random collection of tracks, 'Folding In On Itself' is an introverted collection of musings on change and loss, and is as softly spoken and moving as anything we have put out on Type to date. Handle with care.
    Tim Hecker
    Dropped Pianos
    (Kranky)
    LP
    $10

    SOLD OUT

Tim Hecker has basically ruled 2011. After opening the year with the epic double LP, RAVEDEATH 1972, Hecker bookends the year with piano-based "sketch pieces" which served as the basis for RAVEDEATH. Some folks are saying this new LP isn't as good as that work but I don't know if I agree. Perhaps it's my undying love for the piano but I am quite quite taken by this LP and the sense of space that pervades here vs. the fuller work. In any case, both works are essential listening.

This Tim Hecker release is composed of sketch pieces recorded in 2010 in preparation for what would become the Ravedeath, 1972 album. All of the compositions are piano driven and minimal in nature. This is not a new Tim Hecker album, but rather a peek behind the curtains into the working process. That these pieces stand on their own as compelling soundworks is a testament to the fact that Tim Hecker is at the absolute top of his game at the moment, and has been for years.

    Atlas Mountain
    (Holy Mountain)
    LP
    $13.50

    SOLD OUT

France's High Wolf possesses a natural-born ability to produce tones most conducive to inducing transcendental states. Prolific without wearing out his welcome, the guitarist and effects box manipulator sets loose fervid streams of fever-dream drones. High Wolf's tracks sound as if they've been sluicing since the beginning of time, siphoned for teasingly brief absorption before they shimmer off to the vanishing point. This elite droneur is one of the few musicians who could title a 7-inch A Guide to Healing without it coming off as an ironic gesture or a laughable boast. (Cop one and try not to get a spring in your chakras.) Atlas Nation—recorded in 2010 after a long trip to India and Nepal—deepens High Wolf's penetration into the mystic. It evokes an uneasy peace with a new breed of tribal psychedelia shorn of all hokey signifiers. "Fuji Descent" starts the album with what could be a languid, paradisiacal soundtrack to a scrapped Alejandro Jodorowsky film. "The Dawn of Man" is a stark, stoned processional burrowing into malarial climes where guitars squawk in ominous tongues while congas cave in chests and clear brush with a vengeance. "Raagini" magnifies and psychedelicizes Rapoon's mantric, ritualistic hand-drum patter and tropical-forest drones while hinting at Don Cherry's jazz-raga peregrinations. High Wolf claims that "Haiti" was "recorded in a couple of hours [on] the day of the big earthquake in Haiti, so it's the darkest / saddest High Wolf track ever." It's a fittingly miasmic, climactic threnody. Think of Atlas Nation as a surreal aural travelogue that takes a giant step beyond Jon Hassell's "Fourth World" music—a humid milieu teeming with alien tonalities and oracular currents. It's as welcome as a new, improved entheogen on the streets.

    SOLD OUT

For the past 25 years, New England's Idea Fire Company (IFCO) have positioned themselves at the frontline in the ageless battle for aesthetic purity. Founded by the enigmatic duo of Scott Foust (aka The Commander, aka The Last Great Man) and Karla Borecky, IFCO have built up a bulletproof discography, with each release refining the sound of its predecessor. They have been well served at home through their own Swill Radio imprint, and internationally, by Rund Um Den Watzmann, Entr'acte and, most recently, Ultra Eczema, who published the outstanding Beauty School LP. Music From The Impossible Salon finds the IFCO sound honed into eight elegant settings that variously combine piano, synth, radio, trombone, organ, gong and voice. Using minimal, yet striking gestures, Music From The Impossible Salon reveals itself to be a dusky pleasure center, where the jaded listener can find discreet interuption from the horrors of the day.
Recorded at Wunderwaffen Studios, Nov/Dec 2010, and expertly mastered by Grammy-nominated producer Zupe, Music From The Impossible Salon allows the raw essence of IFCO to ring out like never before. Housed in a Foust/Borecky designed sleeve, in a hand-numbered edition of 300 copies.

A wild new collaboration from long time touring partners and Blackest Rainbow buddies Deas & Allett. The record comprises of two side long pieces both with the same approach in terms of playing; Deas plays guitar pulling together his classical sound and his stunning recent experimental approach from his Quadtych releases while Allett does live manipulations, taking advantage of his long experience as one half of Towering Breaker. Deas and Allett seem to consistently push there work to new levels and sounds, and once again with this record, they do just that, two sounds colliding making something between experimental guitar music, electronica and something on the very fringe of the avant garde.

    (Type)
    LP+CD
    $20

    SOLD OUT

As Norway's premier noise troupe, Lasse Marhaug and John Hegre's Jazkamer project has a certain status to uphold. Rather than resting on their well-earned laurels, Marhaug and Hegre keep a grueling schedule of shows and an even more grueling schedule of releases, which has culminated recently in an ambitious album-a-month series running throughout 2010. While the concept itself is now fairly well-worn, what has astonished this time around is the sheer quality the duo has managed to keep up while flitting from genre to genre with the utmost of ease. Chestnut Thornback Tar was originally the May 2010 installment of the Jazkamer subscription series, and the record that perhaps best sums up the band's wide reach. The album creeps to life with a molten guitar drone well worthy of comparison to Dylan Carlson's molasses-slow compositions. Through wailing sheets of white noise, thick, sustained tones push their way through the track's 20-minute duration, giving the post-millennial drone pretenders more than enough to think about. "Sentimental Journey" feels less like a statement of intent and more like the underlining of a genre that might be well-trodden, but is rarely done with this Zen-like attention to detail. Even this, however, gives little indication of the frothy, hyperactive noise the remaining tracks extol. With a Sissy Spacek-influenced jump cut style, Marhaug, Hegre and their collaborators Nils Are Drønen and Jean-Philippe Gross pummel their way through the back-rooms of metal clubs everywhere, rupturing veins with splattercore drums, burbling noise and screaming feedback. Chestnut Thornback Tar might not be for the faint of heart, but you'd struggle to find a more rewarding collection of intense, metal-drenched experimental noise.
Please note that this is a vinyl-only release and comes with a bonus CD -- a 75-minute mix tape of sorts made by Jazkamer from elements of their 2010 series of releases.

    LP
    $13

    SOLD OUT

The hermetic kosmische lexicon of San Fran-based synth synthesist/composer Jesse Reiner (Jonas Reinhardt's founder and principal architect) has been simmering and swelling at a steady clip the past few years (2010's Powers Of Audition was def a highlight), but the added talents of drummer Damon Palermo (Mi Ami), bassist Diego Gonzalez (Citay, 3 Leafs), and guitarist Phil Manley (Trans Am, more) has levitated the JR Experience to a whole new head-music hall o' fame. Recorded in Berlin, mixed in SF, then mastered/cut back in Berlin at Dubplates, Music For The Tactile Dome is easily the most deep-trip micro-focus Jonas odyssey to date, nine technicolor fractals of glittering synthesizer skyways and master-crafted pulsing kraut terrariums. A handful of tracks ("Smokey Jotus," "Hander Zader," etc) invoke more of the classic live JR vibe, with propulsive cold-grooved rhythm sectioning, but by and large Dome is designed for heavy headphone communion, an expanding magic eye tapestry of brainwave activity constellations. Those who caught their Euro tour last year with Rene Hell know how expert this crew reigns in the live environment so go see them if/when they pass through your area code; on tour with Cloudland Canyon currently.

    Leyland Kirby
Eager To Tear Apart The Stars
    (HAFTW)
    LP
    $20

    SOLD OUT

James Leyland Kirby is a prolific artist with a remarkably long and varied career working inside, outside and beyond the electronic underground. From his roots as one-half of renowned audio pranksters and sonic agitators V/VM, to his critically-acclaimed work as The Caretaker and, most recently, Leyland Kirby -- he's always attracted the attention of an often bewildered audience, although his stature and position as serious auteur has somehow grown exponentially with every year that has gone by since his beginnings in rainy Edgeley back in the mid-'90s. Eager To Tear Apart The Stars is his follow-up proper to the now-classic Sadly, The Future Is No Longer What It Was trilogy of LPs, which were released in 2009 to widespread critical acclaim. Since then, he's quietly ushered in the demented white label vinyl series Intrigue & Stuff, and released another album as The Caretaker, An Empty Bliss Beyond This World. Eager To Tear Apart The Stars echoes and refracts the maverick solo synth classics of Roedelius and Harold Budd, but with a temporal warping and sense of decayed decadence individual to Kirby's oeuvre. There's an ostensible sadness to these six pieces, but of a life-affirming and subtly ambiguous kind, evoking almost indecipherably mixed emotions of a rare and enigmatic variety which continue to haunt long after the record has come to a close.
The album artwork features another specially-commissioned painting by Ivan Seal. Mastered and cut at Berlin's Dubplates & Mastering.

As news of new rock music made it to Japan from the UK and the USA -- mostly via rock magazines and music papers, with most LPs tough to find even on import -- something was lost in translation in Japan that allowed it to mutate well beyond its original remit. Rallizes took rock music at its word while envisioning it as both unnecessarily complicated and too stupid by far. In doing so, they formulated an inspirational blueprint that would go on to have a marked effect on everything that came after them in Japanese underground music. It's a music that's as loose as it is uptight, as sophisticated as it is punk-primitive, as radical as it is simplistic. Includes an insert with liner notes.
$90 post-paid in the US only. International shipping is additional and will be added once a price quote is obtained.
    JON MUELLER
    Alphabet Of Movements
    (Type)
    LP
    $17.50

    SOLD OUT

With the music of Milwaukee-native Jon Mueller, patience is the key. His radical snare workouts are meditative master-classes in drumming, but require a distinct offering of time and attention to truly enjoy the dense clouds of sound his music creates. After crafting last year's critically acclaimed 'The Whole', Mueller decided to put together a live set that, while not reflecting the over-dubbed nature of the album itself, reflected the philosophy held within. The result was 'I Almost Expect to be Remembered as a Chair', and Mueller proceeded to perform this piece at various venues across the USA. Utilizing a unique snare drum setup, which finds the drums mounted on small amplifiers, Mueller's enviable focus is put centre-stage and his resolve transferred absolutely into this dense, moving twenty-minute piece. Here, the composition has been recorded to tape with a tireless attention to detail by Greg Norman at Steve Albini's legendary Electric Audio studio. The haunting, resonant drones spring to life with a surprising clarity, and the silo's natural reverb gives the percussion a deeply human quality.

    SOLD OUT

John Mannion is a member of the Red Light Collective operating out of Rockaway, NY and breeding intense electronic music acts like Yellow Tears, Halflings, Cowards, Teeny Bopper, and John's Cathode Terror Secretion. "Slice Through or/in Glassmetal" is his debut LP and is a three years in the making document of extreme electronic composition. A ultra dynamic mix of modern classical, electronic, noise, and power electronics techniques. Kind of makes me think of what it may have been like if Penderecki made a power electronics record. Whirling electric box fan, piercing electronics, junk metal clang, screeching violins, harsh and whispered vocals, and haunting vocals by opera singer Caitlin Haughney. Recommended for fans of CON-DOM, Krzysztof Penderecki, John Wiese, Iannis Xenakis, Kevin Drumm, Yellow Tears, Aaron Dilloway, Genocide Organ.
Cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates and Mastering, Berlin. Limited to 500 copies. 3 color silkscreen sleeves with the "Hanson Droll Flaps" and featuring cover art by the artist and 11" x 11" lyric sheet.

    SOLD OUT

    Just arrived

In May of 1978, there was a five-night music festival at Artists Space on Hudson Street in Tribeca. Although almost no one cared at the time, the event has since entered the halls of legend, as one of the signal events in the history of the no wave era -- one that managed to include both the Lower East Side bands and those fronted by their Western contemporaries. On the final night of the festival, the two bands playing were Mars and Teenage Jesus And The Jerks. What we are presenting to you today are both sets by Mars -- the most mysterious, and bizarrely-styled NY band of their day. One set takes up each side, and while they are similar in song selection, it's wild to hear how different they are in terms of attack, sonics and approach. The quartet -- Nancy Arlen, China Burg, Sumner Crane, Mark Cuningham -- was never captured at its mutational best in the studio, but this live slab is revelatory. Tunings, structures and rhythms from a place Capt. Beefheart once called "the other side of the fence," this is Mars at their most glorious.

    (DNT)
    LP
    $12

    SOLD OUT

Debut vinyl release from Californian droniac SEAN McCANN. Recorded in the summer of 2009, this album was meant to be a continuation of the kaleidoscopic sound of his first albums, Phylum Sigh and Frame Of Mind. While still beaming with beauty and grace, this record demands a bit more from the listener than his other works. The first side of Chance Are Staying explores stringed melodic minimalism à la Tony Conrad, yet with much more poignant and somber motifs. The second side displays the ambit of his sound, from rapturous (and even… grooving?) violin and saxophone blurs to ecstatic mind-warps. This record stands as a pillar in the dawn of this young man's career. Guaranteed to make your heart shine with memories of affection and glimpses of an uncertain future.

    Sincere World
    (Amethyst Sunset)
    LP
    $16

    SOLD OUT

I don't do year-end best-of lists -- I find them too stressful, kinda like making a mixtape but worse. But if I did, Sean McCann's The Capital would have been on the list and now he closes out the year with this beauty on Amethyst Sunset. If I'm not mistaken, Sincere World precedes that work despite being released after. Before, after, it doesn't matter -- Sincere World is an outstanding work. The label describes this album as the "younger brother" to The Capital, which I find an apt description. Perhaps less sophisticated but more earnest and direct, it's not a matter of preferring one over the other but rather, sounds are needed to satisfy the listener's mood.

"Listening to new work from Sean McCann is always an exciting prospect. Go far back into this young pioneer's catalog and you'll without a doubt uncover a collection of music as diverse as it is long. What you may also notice is the consistency with which Sean portrays himself. His music is always fearless, frank and personal. Sincere World is another turn toward Sean's signature earnestness. Open Resolve and The Capital, both cleverly laced with swirling filter manipulation and confounding superimposition of manic and sloth-like compositions, exposed us to a more playful side of McCann's persona. These works are on the surface a bit zany, but deeper down they still maintain a charming character—something that draws the listener in magically. Sincere World is the somber younger brother to these two. Sincere World is adrift on Badalamenti-like lethargy, skeptical of the world around and unsure of what to do about it. But despite his bashfulness, he is every bit as charming and perhaps even more so, for there are no rough edges on him. In six movements, Sean takes us from under the bed to behind the bleachers and finally, to the bottom of the sea. Recorded mostly in 2009, Sincere World has after two years in hiding, finally mustered the audacity to come out into the open. This is the world Sean McCann lives in, and I want to do everything I can to live there too." - Michael Jantz

And yet another killer album from the ever-productive Mark McGuire (Emeralds). It just keeps getting better, as he delivers another fine set of tunes in his perfected style. A few more electronic elements than usual and even some voices, but still the unique blend of feel-good riffs, electric and acoustic loops and melodies that just stick in the head. This album is chockablock with short hits and one long jam of blissed-out McGuire ambience. Awesome. Electric and acoustic guitar, vocals, and guitar-synthesizer recorded digitally between June 2010 and July 2011 in Westlake, Ohio and Portland, Oregon.

    $13

    SOLD OUT

Rare vinyl appearance by the legendary noise artist, here joined by a "grindcore" drummer & the whole affair has a rather ecstatic free jazz feel to it, with the pair trading off at times and working up feverish build-ups."Noise is the unconsciousness of music" -Masami Akita

"In short, it was fabulous: not really improvising, but suggesting the marathoning spirit of high-impact free jazz; not really composition, but held together with the technique and concentration of grindcore drumming. Just barely, through the amazing din and throughout the set, you could hear sounds that weren’t coming from Merzbow: the audience cheering." -NY Times

Merzbow (Masami Akita) is the Japanese legend and progenitor of Noise music. For three decades his view of making music has created a new and different sound entirely unlike any other in the history of musical composition. Balázs Pándi is one of Hungary’s hottest commodities, welding the tools of grindcore to a free, improvised style that has kept him consistently in demand.

Teaming up together, the percussive attack of Pándi has provided a variance and dynamic that has brought an entirely new dimension to the Merzbow live performance. This show in New York captures a truly inspired and vibrant concert – termed independently by both Masami Akita and mixing engineer Submerged as "SPACE JAZZ".

The show breaks down into an opening duet, Merzbow solo, another duet, Balázs solo, and a 22-minute soul searing ending demolishing duo performance. There is not much to say in any language about the music of Merzbow – it must be heard to be believed, as it cannot be explained in words. This performance is the highlight of the recent duo performances of Akita and Pándi; we at Ohm Resistance are honored to present it.

    SOLD OUT

This is the second official full-length offering by Cleveland, Ohio duo Mist featuring Sam Goldberg (of Radio People) and John Elliott (Emeralds, Outer Space, Imaginary Softwoods, etc.) after 2009's self-titled debut effort on Amethyst Sunset. A suite consisting of seven complex, layered compositions shows new progression in composition and melody from the duo. From the lightning-fast, bittersweet crescendo of "Twin Lanes" to the dramatic chord progressions of "I Can Still Hear Your Voice," House is a certain expansion in execution and construction. Tracks like "P.M." put a new take on the long-form Mist style with cryptic alien vocoder and humid pad sounds, while "Mist House" and "Dead Occasion" reveal new, complex territories that will most certainly please fans of the previous Mist recordings. John Elliott: Moog Voyager OS, Roland RS-101, Sequential Circuits Prophet 600, Roland SH-101, Phasers, vocals; Sam Goldberg: Korg Polysix, Univox Minikorg, Multivox MX 202, Dave Smith Instruments Mopho.

Second full length LP from Scotland / New York weirdo Ruaraidh Sanachan who also is the guitar shredder in Moon Unit and runs on of the best tape labels in the UK, Sick Head. Reality Bridge's four tracks of psyche-out futuristic electric haze are a step up from Sanachan's previous full length LP, 'Quantum Odyssey' we released almost two years ago. 'Reality Bridge' is one hell of a record, pulling together kosmische synth, guitar wailing, sci-fi insanity and b-movie bliss outs. The record is housed in a pro-printed sleeve featuring new insane artwork by Ruaraidh featuring a super degraded repeated self portrait with synth in space. SOLD OUT

UK IMPORT. Stunning new record from Natural Snow Buildings, the collaborative project between Mehdi Ameziane and Solange Gularte, the minds behind Twinsistermoon and Isengrind respectively. This new epic from the French duo is their first physical release since 2009's well received 'Shadow Kingdom', also issued by us here at Blackest Rainbow, and it follows on from 2010's download only 'The Centauri Agent' and both Twinsistermoon and Isengrind full length LPs. So 2010 has been a relatively quiet year for Natural Snow Buildings in comparison to 2008 and 2009. Mehdi and Solange have been working on 'Waves of the Random Sea' for us for quite sometime, both in terms of art and audio, and it really has come together beautifully. Solange has created a truly stunning series of artworks that spread across the 4 panels of the gatefold sleeve, and the music is a gorgeous tapestry of dreamy drone blurred with their enchanting ethereal folk balladry. This release continues to show how important every aspect of a Natural Snow Buildings release means to them, I was blown away by the standard of the music and artwork.
Pressed on heavyweight virgin vinyl, and housed in a beautiful gatefold sleeve featuring artwork by Solange. The vinyl edition features an extra track not on the CD and all tracks in their entirety.

    $20

    SOLD OUT

Split LP that sees the husband/wife team of Grant & Rachel Evans (Quiet Evenings) together alone. A side each dedicated to each of their solo projects. Grant's Nova Scotia Arms set presents a set of guitar-based drones that drift beautifully from traquility to slightly menacing territory and back again -- very nice! Rachel's MSOTT has gained some notoriety with releases on the esteemed Digitalis label. Her 1st track starts with an edgy organ-like buzz melody before her familiar, reverb-laden vocals quietly make their entrance in the background. 2nd track rests on a 2-chord progression upon which many layers of noisy synth hijinks ensue. The chaotic elements, including a high-pitch whining tea-kettle effect, are pushed high in the mix while the melodic arpeggios and her voice are relegated to the background. An interesting departure from the territory laid out in her Digitalis albums.

This split lp sees the man/wife duo of Grant and Rachel Evans performing under their own solo projects. In the past two years they have released a bunch of awesome tapes and cd-rs on their label “Hooker Vision”. They also record and perform as droneduo Quiet Evenings. This record was created to celebrate the crystal anniversary of the couple. And indeed, on both sides Grant and Rachel create sounds which sound like the perfect marriage.

Replica is an electronic song cycle based around audio procured from TV ad compilations. These sample-based meditations are as lyrical as they are ecological, featuring re-purposed "ghost vocals" which serve as narration for DANILE LOPATIN’s signature amorphous, ambient passages. Lopatin's Juno-60 is still prominent, but Returnal's placid, synthetic surroundings are accelerated through darker, more unpredictable terrains via Lopatin's use of samplers, analog filtering, tape-op, piano, plate reverb and sub-bass. The result is a heightened sense of music as part and parcel of an overall sonic terrain.

Transparent Winter follows on from the debut release on the always excellent Time-Lag label and releases on the equally great PSF, Opax and A Silent Place. Painting Petals On Planet Ghost is the trio of Ramona Ponzini with Roberto & Maurizio Opalio (aka My Cat Is An Alien). Here they return for a new full length vinyl release on Blackest Rainbow. PPOPG create some wonderfully fragile and unusual experiments that fall somewhere between folk, psychedelia and drone. Ramono Ponzini sings in Japanese as well as contributing 'furin, metal and wooden japanese wind chimes'. These are combined with Maurizio Opalio on acoustic guitar, and Roberto Opalio on 'mini keyboard, bodhran, alientronics, and wordless vocalizations'. The trio's eclectic setup helps them create some truly luscious and mysterious music that is perfectly fragile, strange, distant and delicate. 'Mars Appears' is a hazy dream piece with layered guitars, strange electronics and Ramono's perfectly delivered Japanese vocals drawing the listener in surrounded by a strange but perfect fitting created by the Opalio brothers musical output. 'The Mountain' is equally as otherworldy as the previous sides track, with swirling strings and out of this world electronics created by Roberto and Maurizio. Whilst Ramona's vocal are almost delivered in a trance like state. A extremely beautiful record with a gorgeous organic feel to it.
The record is housed in a sleeve featuring film photographs of flowers. Edition of 250 copies pressed on 140gram virgin vinyl.

    SOLD OUT

Pretty outstanding set of very subtle mash-ups of sorts, using various ethnic musics as source material. Padden's pretty respectful of the original musics, the various combinations are pretty non-intrusive, sounding organic & true -- nothing gimmicky about the sounds on this piece of wax. Really great stuff!

Label Press Release: Ship Chop is a celebratory cut-up of far-flung musics. Edited, collaged and re-arranged by Daniel Padden from original vinyl sources to create impossible collaborations between musical ghosts. It is both reverential and sacrilegious, giving the music its full praise whilst also subjecting it to playful subversion. Some of the editing is obvious and transparent, but some of it much less so, where sounds from different recordings and continents overlap into an unlikely whole.

    Andrew Pekler
    Sentimental Favorites
    (Dekorder)
    LP
    $17

    SOLD OUT

This newest Dekorder batch is pretty choice but this record is probably the one I'm looking forward to the most. Pekler was heavily involved with the outstanding Ursula Bogner release earlier this year.

Label Press Release: Sentimental Favourites is Andrew Pekler's first album for Dekorder and his first solo release since 2009's Entanglements In The Orthopedic Sensorium. As is the case with all of his recordings, the music contained herein is the result of an investigation into an abandoned genre or aesthetic trope of the past. In this case, the object of Pekler's retro-speculative archaeology is a particular strain of late 60's/early 70's easy listening which melded the sophisticated songwriting pathos of Burt Bacharach, Jimmy Webb or The Carpenters with a post-psychedelic attention to sonic detail and was exemplified by such ensembles as The Mystic Moods Orchestra, 101 Strings, late-period Santo & Johnny and countless one-off albums.

On Sentimental Favourites, Andrew Pekler attempts, without irony, to recapture the emotional sweep and sonic grain of these last innocent byways of pop history with his own signature electronic textures, loops and fragments of melody. The individual songs and interludes, ranging in tone from the haunting and pensive to the wistful and breezy, comprise a carefully planned sequence. Enhanced by the sounds of nature between and sometimes during the tracks, the listener is taken through a cycle of mood states which gradually condense over the course of the album into an all-encompassing atmosphere of sentimental reflection. Repeated listening is recommended.

Northern California's Pregnant is more of a hermit in a forest project than a bedroom project. Imagined by Daniel Trudeau, it's a special brand of weirdness that might come from living too close to the natural mushrooms in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Although there's no cause for concern, no one in or associated with the group is pregnant and on drugs, to our limited knowledge. Pregnant ranges from flipped and backspun circus music betwixt twinkling alien transmissions and heavy drone to pitch-shifted nursery folk mimicking a children's sing-a-long tape. The distortion hovers between genuine silliness to possessed insanity sheep-skinned in coyness. -- Blake Gillespie, Impose Magazine.

Sadly (for us left coasters), in November Leyna Noel aka Psychic Reality decamped from SF to NYC, but before packing up her every worldly possession and road-tripping trans-America she eked out a sliver of precious time to hole up in the studio with Phil Manley (Trans Am, Jonas Reinhardt, etc) and record her long-awaited debut full-length on thick 2 inch tape. Vibrant New Age is the result. The name says it all. But Noel's New Age is not the 80's redux fad of healing crystals, pastel fades, dolphin consciousness, etc, but a living, electrified awakening. From the high drama drum machinery of "Fruit" and "Expla" to the naked, airy avant-pop of "Hi High" and "Fanta" through to the stuttery, mechanized power ballad finale, "Soft Script," this is Noel at her most majestic and fully realized and it's a wild life-force to behold. Here at Weird Forest HQ, we like our black metal a bit off the beaten path & this epic 2LP definitely fits the bill. Awesome, grimy riff monsters co-mingle with more atmospheric pieces that are 2-3 levels beyond the standard Burzum synth piece. Apparently, these guys are Christians, not murderers so you can enjoy your occult blackness without guilt (or with guilt, if you're Catholic). If you enjoyed the new Dead Reptile Shrine we just put out, you definitely need to grip this as well.

One of the founders of this projects came from the Swedish underworld and participated in such acts as Dodfodd, Ofermod and Emit. The third full-length album of Reuerorum ib Malacht, URKAOS, was recorded last summer (2006) at Viken outside of Torsang, Dalecarlia, as well as in Torsangs K:a, The Church of Torsang. The original recording consists of ca: 80 minutes of music, of which 20 minutes is a lengthy outro. The main part of the release is in the same vein as The Old God, yet more in the legendary vein of the 1350's Catholic Black Metal tradition.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Originally from the Bay Area and currently residing in Los Angeles (the latter of where he's spent most of the past decade recording and performing along the West Coast), WILLIAM HUTSON has been a longtime stalwart of the american synth and experimental noise underground quietly releasing small-run works on respected labels such as Monorail Trespassing, Ekhein, Arbor, Peasant Magik, and Jugular Forest among others. Some Kissed Charms That Would Not Protect Them over two side-long pieces effectively straddles between orchestral Crumar analog synth string swells, noise, field recordings, and experimental modern day minimalism. The attention and monumental focus on composition and movements within each piece is extremely evident as well as Hutson's knowledge and command of modular analog synthesis. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

    $20

    SOLD OUT

Since Porcelain Opera (TYPE 077CD), his debut for Type, U.S. noisenik Jeff Witscher aka Rene Hell has put out a whole series of collaborations, 7"s, tapes and splits. Looking to his love of classical minimalism, Jeff took it as the starting point for this new record. The result is a deeply electronic rendition of a classical electronic formula; the digital and analog synthesizer and drum machine sounds that brought Porcelain Opera to life are reframed and transferred into a very different compositional structure. The Terminal Symphony is Jeff's attempt to write tighter, more composed pieces of music -- something of a reaction against the glut of long, often-flabby drone compositions that have become a mainstay in the scene. The pieces here are short, concise, and packed full of ideas that can take multiple listens to unravel, and the album as a whole is almost obsessively structured and complex. Each side of the record is composed very specifically with a beginning, middle and an end, and when we begin with the familiar grunt and grind of "Chamber Forte," it is only mere minutes before the track dissolves into the main theme of the album. An appropriate enough comparison might be arch-recluse Aphex Twin, but there is no pandering to dance music culture here. Rather, Jeff has used his enviable background in noise, punk and synthesizer music to come up with something totally removed from the current Kosmische revival. The album comes to a close with the hauntingly melancholy and purposefully referential "Adagio For String Portrait." The dancing synthetic blips that pirouette across Witscher's mournful electronic waves not only re-enforce the decades-long love affair between electronic and classical music, but help to define it in 2011.
The vinyl edition of this album comes with a 40-minute bonus CD The Hilton, including previously-unreleased material.

    SOLD OUT

Sweet Hassle is the debut LP from Ryan Garbes (Wet Hair, Raccoo-oo-oon), fresh from his 7-inch on Arbor and his cassette on NNA. A man in a small college town hours away from the influences that foul a musician’s mind, Garbes has a lot of time to hang, especially in the recording studio. On Sweet Hassle, he incorporates heavy Velvets live bootleg vibes straight from the bedroom soundboard, with a touch of melodic electronic drone and a Byrds dusting.

2005 was the last time anyone heard from Melissa Agate aka Sanso-Xtro on her record for Type, Sentimentalist. Since then, quite a bit has happened. Agate has relocated to her native Australia and the move has treated her well. Fountain Fountain Joyous Mountain takes a lot of the ideas from her first record and dials them in, pushing everything to the next level. This collection of songs is a quiet force, blissfully confident and expertly assembled. Sanso's soundworld is a fully immersive environment. On the opener, "Fountain Fountain," we get a glimpse of everything to come. There's this carefully controlled chaos at work that is immediately hypnotizing. Agate sings simple passages toward the end, welcoming listeners into this new world as her voice floats above the fray. It becomes obvious as the album progresses that Agate is, at heart, a drummer. The staccato rhythms and percussive embellishments bring the album to life. These rapid-fire beats in conjunction with precise, half-speed instrumentation work in perfect harmony. Reminiscent of Blackdance-era Klaus Schulze at times, there's an intoxicating dizzyness that is effortlessly present in "The Origin Of Birds" and "Wood Owl Wings A Rush Rush." Agate even throws a few nods to free jazz with "Goodnight Thylacine." Her skill as a drummer is matched by her ability as a songwriter, knowing when to push it over the top and when to hold back. Album closer "Exit: Joyous Mountain," sounds like a lost Alan Lomax gem with its melodica/harmonica duet and delicate singing. "Hello Night Crow" is the literal and figurative center of the album, though. It starts with a ringing synth loop that gives nothing away until the chord changes emerge a minute in. Again, it's about the slow-build, raising the tension and anticipation before melting into the sky. "You wouldn't recognize that it's not there anymore," Agate sings over the bubbling waves of synths. It is beautiful and crushing.

    SOLD OUT

Seattle-based Simon Henneman's first solo vinyl release is here. Mr. Henneman has worn many hats in the musical vortex of the Seattle sub-underground, most "famously" as one of the Diminished Men, who released an LP on the Sun City Girls Abduction label in 2009. That LP gave the lucky few who procured a copy an idea of the talents of that great band. Here, Mr. Henneman strikes out on his own and creates a solo journey of a much more intimate palette. Playing every instrument on the record (guitars, bass, saxophones, clarinet, percussion, keys), Mr. Henneman evokes a mood and mystery unmatched. From the ethno jazz/noir played in a Turkish harem vibe to the soundtrack for flipping through a Raymond Carver novella illustrated by Raymond Pettibon, this LP slithers into the subconscious and throws you against a back alley wall to seduce you into making a real bad decision seem OK!

In Spring 2010, Sonic Youth gathered at their Echo Canyon West studio in Hoboken, New Jersey, to watch the rushes of a new film, Simon Werner a Disparu, by French director Fabrice Gobert. They spent the following few weeks recording music which was then shaped as needed to fit the various scenes. For this release, rather than present the small clips of music as used in the film, the band went back in the autumn to the original tapes and re-organized the various pieces for this original soundtrack release, sometimes montaging multiple tracks together, other times extending cues into new sonic realms. The film premiered at Cannes in May 2010 and opened nationwide in France

    SOLD OUT

    Just arrived

Limited vinyl edition -- comes with a bonus 50-minute album on CD called Man With Garbage. Much has been made of the re-emergence of beats in experimental music, but if you listened carefully enough to Pete Swanson's output to this point, you'll realize those rhythms have been present for a long time. The New York-based artist might still be best known for being a member of now-defunct noise duo Yellow Swans, but he's made plenty of solo music since then, even if it has been quite difficult to obtain. Straddling a line between free guitar noise ("I Don't Rock At All") and singed electronics ("Challenger"), Man With Potential shows that Swanson is unafraid to dive headfirst into the dank, pulsing soundscapes that helped birth his old band. Where Yellow Swans used pulses to underpin their cascading white noise, Swanson here puts the chattering 140 bpm percussion at center stage, not least on the album's opening track, charmingly titled "Misery Beat." Setting the stage for the music to follow, we are thrown headfirst into chattering, synthesized squeals and dense kick drums before being smacked around the head with the kind of slippery noise lead we've not heard since Going Places. This is Birmingham techno filtered through the mists of the Pacific Northwest, and it's all the better for it. Elsewhere, "Remote View" explores a more downtempo sound; coming across like post-apocalyptic house music as heard from a club bathroom. With Man With Potential, Pete Swanson has crafted his most defining statement to date; a blistering collection of contemporary club music with a deafening noise twist. It might not be easy listening, but who said life had to be easy?

Long awaited reissue of the debut release from Mehdi Amezianes Twinsistermoon project, originally released as a gorgeous handmade self released CDR in 2007, to many of Natural Snow Buildings and each of their solo project, this is the pick of all their releases, which is rather ironic being that its one of the smallest release runs in the discography of all the Natural Snow Buildings and related projects, it is infact the most limited release of all the Twinsistermoon releases. But due to the massive level of word of mouth about their releases on blogs and in the smaller press publications this release has become one of those holy grail releases. Unlessof course you have a small wedge of cash lying around doing nothing. So, finally, and with great pleasure, the much talked of reissue is finally here. The record opens with a real stunner, 'I Wish I Could Drown The World In Reverberation' is a trance inducing piece, with percussive tambourine, dreamy vocals, and shimmering strings, with a gorgeous organic rich feeling. It's followed by 'To Breath Underwater', a more pastoral folk song, akin to some late 60s/early 70s folk artists. The album as a whole focuses more on the song based material which occasionally venture into the more far out zone outs.
The vinyl reissue features an entire side worth of new material, all of which is exclusive to the vinyl edition and is packaged in a beautiful gatefold sleeve featuring stunning new artwork by Solange Gularte. Limited to 600 copies.

Limited edition full-color gatefold LP version of the first Sublime Frequencies CD release from 2003. The equator runs through only ten countries on earth and I bet that you cannot name them all without consulting a map. Indonesia is one of them and the only nation in Asia with the equatorial stripe impaling it. There are so many different cultures spread out on this chain of islands that it would take several lifetimes to experience them all properly. Within this umbrella of diversity is one of the world's richest and most dazzling sound museums. Sumatra is the northwestern entry point to the great archipelago. Approximately the size of California, Indonesia's largest island has a wide variety of natural wonders: dense jungles, picturesque mountain peaks, gargantuan lakes, lowland swamps, active volcanoes, and highly frequent seismic activity. Populating this gorgeous setting are orangutans, tigers, durian trees, the largest flower on earth, dozens of cultures and languages, myths and folklore, and much more music than you've ever been allowed to discover. The style selections on this LP include forms of droning beat pop, early Orkes Melayu songs, Batak Tapanuli, traditional Minang music, and folk drama soundtracks heard by only a handful of outsiders. The recordings are from old cassette tapes; decaying documents of various sound qualities containing some of the most eccentric artifacts ever uncovered from this fascinating island. Assembled and compiled by Alan Bishop (Sun City Girls) in July of 1989.

How do they do it? Are they smarter? Are they better? How can it be ignored or denied? How is it possible that one of the most unique, perfectly composed and performed, intense and awe-inspiring musical legacies the world has ever known is looming north of the equator physically tucked-between world cultural giants India, China, and Thailand, without more than a whisper from ethnomusicologists or those who define themselves as "purveyors of world music"? Not only are the roots of this music unique, but so are the results after incorporating outside instrumentation from modern colonial and (unavoidable) international influence. What the Burmese have done with a piano is so precise in the adaptation to their existing form and melody that one would think they invented it. Burmese music has a very distinct sound and whatever instrument is assimilated into its core only seems to magnify the original intent without depending upon outside ideas relating to each component utilized. This collection will immediately bring you up to speed to what you have been missing all along. The time is now to put the real music of Myanmar on the map once and for all. Here are some of the greatest names from the past 50 years of Burmese musical history from the original recordings featuring Mar Mar Aye, Bo Sein, and the incomparable Tonte Theintan. Listen, and be amazed!

Spending the greater part of the last decade assembling this masterpiece while tracking down most of the musicians in the process, STUART ELLIS of Radiodiffusion International has compiled a mind-blowing set of Pakistani instrumentals spanning the period between 1966 and 1976. It's all here: rock and roll beat, surf, folk traditional mixed with pop, film tunes, electric guitars, sitar and organ solos, brilliant percussion and arrangements crafted by the grooviest bands of the period: The Panthers, The Mods, The Bugs, The Blue Birds, The Abstracts, The Aay Jays, The Fore Thoughts, Nisar Bazmi, and Sohail Rana. Situated between Afghanistan, India and Iran, the collision of cultural influences in Pakistan gave birth to music that was, and still is, unlike anything heard anywhere else on the planet. By the late 1960s, previous restrictions on musical expression began to soften and bands that were playing American and British pop covers became popular in Karachi's burgeoning night club scene and at private dance parties. Long hair came into fashion among young men and hashish became the popular drug of choice on college campuses across Pakistan. Soon, hippies from both North America and Europe began flocking to Karachi, Lahore and Peshawar. Very few of the bands that formed during this time actually got to record. Like their neighbors in India, the Pakistani record industry was more focused on releasing "filmi" music, which had just started to incorporate the electric guitar and electric sitar. Pakistan's musical revolution ended in June 1977 after a coup d'état and the establishment of a pure Islamic state governed by Sharia law. This marked the end of the "Swinging '70s" in Pakistan as night clubs and alcohol were banned throughout the country. Television and cinema, as well as popular music, were now subjected to government censorship. After the clamp-down, many Pakistani musicians left the country and moved to America, Canada and England.
This limited 2LP set sourced straight from the original EMI Pakistan masters & housed in a heavy-duty full-color gatefold jacket with superb photos of the musicians and extended liner notes by compiler Stuart Ellis.

Indian music has become a global musical language but its South Asian roots remain strong, diverse and local. As with our introductory anthology of this kind (Psych Funk 101 -- WPFC 101) this anthology covers the 'golden years' of the movement, from approximately 1970 until 1983. Much of the music on this compilation springs from the Bollywood film industry; composers such as R.D. Burman and the brothers known as Kalyanji Anandji, whose work makes up much of this anthology, recorded and released an inordinate amount of soundtracks. That experiments in the fusion of India's classical traditions of Hindustani and Carnatic music, folk music such as bhangra and dandiya and Western psychedelia and funk music would occur at some point is only natural. Also included are off the beaten path Indian experiments in psych funk -- for example, two songs from the Simla Beat garage-psych albums, and an oft-heard Deep Purple cover by the ground-breaking Atomic Forest -- and examples of the Indian psych funk influence on European 70s musicians. Throughout the extensive liner notes, WPFC attempts to broaden the definition of global psychedelia: the early researchers who first coarsely defined the genre - and limited its subgenres -- did so at the same time that these experiments were first issued. That they would obscure these contributions to the global psychedelic canon is understandable. But it is time to correct this oversight.

Three men came to Chapel Hill in late November of 2006 to spread their sounds: the show happened to fall on a holiday and Aaron Moore, Daniel Padden and Clarence Manuelo played to a small crowd of fifteen or so folks in the friendly confines of the Nightlight Bar and Club. What ensued was an unfolding carpet woven from waves of tape, twang and beating of objects. The old piano even got in on the action - the floor was played and, as the gentlemen sang, the books lining the walls seemed to hum back. This was one of only four shows that the chimera-like trio shared in the fall of 2006.
The LP was mastered by Kev Reverb and comes in hand-printed sleeves made by Matt Hart in a numbered edition of 100.

    SOLD OUT

UK IMPORT. Vinyl reissue of this fine record from James Toth, aka Wand, aka Wooden Wand that was issued earlier this year as a super limited CDR mounted on a block of wood. 'Wither Thou Goest, Cretin' has a kind of lo-fi sound of some of Wand's earlier work combined with the more confident sound of some of his recent releases, it kinda fits somewhere between 'The Harem Of The Sundrum and the Witness Figg' and 'Born Bad' in the extensive Wand catalogue. At times this record has a really underground surreal sound to it, not just in terms of songwriting, but at times with the music itself, and combined with Toth's ever changing deliverance of vocals throughout the songs, it produces Toth's unique style. There's not many singer songwriters doing what Toth is doing right now, and here he's at the top of his game.

The dissolution of Iowa City avants, RACCOO-OO-OON, was a tough pill to swallow. At the forefront of the now saturated weirdo DIY rebirth, the boys from the heartland made strange noises and oddball sing-alongs that pleased a wide swatch of curious collectors. Their albums were scooped up quietly and quickly as fervor for their hi-jinks grew as quickly as their reputation. But the amicable splintering of Raccoo-oo-oon has delivered with it equally mesmerizing and jarring experimentation. Through principle member SHAWN REED’s Night People label, his partnership with RYAN GARBES as WET HAIR has staked a new claim to adventurous music. The duo’s drums and kitchen sink mentality has ventured across the vast plain of styles and sounds, only to arrive at the infectious hybrid of psychedelia, electronic pop, and kosmische that dots their De Stijl full-length debut, In Vogue Spirit.

Three words: Keith Fullerton Whitman. KFW's side of this split is in the style of his Generator music. Two more words: Fucking vinyl. Keith's explorations in this vein have been EPIC but unfortunately, only physically available on cassette. Hopefully this side is a teaser of future release of this music on vinyl. Alien Radio's set is good stuff as well, veering more toward traditional music forms and really rounds out this worthwhile release.

Label Press Release: We are stoked and honoured to release this Deutsch-Amerikanische meeting of two Meisters of the Modular Electronic Music System (originally invented by Don Buchla in 1963 for the likes of Morton Subotnick, Ramon Sender, Terry Riley et al at the San Francisco Tape Music Center). Both are presenting very distinct approaches displaying the vast possibilities of the machine yet maintaining similar Klang aesthetics (and maximum quality).

KFW is a renowned master of the Modular, especially in live situations. "101105" is Whitman captured at his most symphonic. Recorded last year at one of the semi-monthly "The Bunker" parties in Brooklyn opening for members of Ectomorph he sent the audience (all high on LSD) straight into sawtooth arpeggio heaven. "101105" is a condensed edit of these recordings, cut on 45rpm for maximum fidelity. KFW has released records on a myriad of labels, most notably on Kranky and Planet µ (under his Hrvatski pseudonym). Last year's (vinyl-only) album "Disingenuity b/w Disingenuousness" on Pan made it into many year-end Top 10 lists, including The Wire and Boomkat. This year Whitman has been commissioned a residency at GRM studios to work on a piece for François Bayle's original 80-channel acousmonium!

Alien Radio is one of many aliases of Northern Germany's Ulf Schütte, a (part-time) member of Datashock, Black To Comm, Aosuke, Phantom Horse, etc. and founder of the Tape Tektoniks cassette label. His recent Modular System explorations showcase a more basic, sketchy and song-based approach, reminding of Jan Jelinek's Ursula Bogner recordings and having been compared to the likes of Conny Planck, Delia Derbyshire and Dick Raaijmakers. His debut release was a split 7" on the Belgian Kraak label with Köhn, Ducktails and Peaking Lights.
